WEST CHESTER LAUNCHING PAD FOR INTERACTIVE MUSIC VIDEO CHANNEL; STARNET, INC. TO SATELLITE DELIVER THE BOX BEGINNING TODAY

WEST CHESTER, Pa., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Starnet, Inc. will make The Box, cable's pioneering interactive music video channel, accessible to millions more television viewers worldwide when it begins satellite delivery from here today, Alan McGlade, president of Starnet, announced.
The Box, currently available to more than 13 million homes, will take a giant technological step when its interactive music video programming will be transmitted via satellite (Satcom 4, Transponder 11) beginning at noon from the West Chester headquarters of Starnet, one of the cable industry's leading providers of marketing and advertising services. The Box has been relying exclusively for distribution on video jukebox hardware at each local cable television system.
"From a technical and programming standpoint, Starnet and The Box are a perfect match," commented McGlade, whose company will be assuming management responsibilities for The Box. "Together we'll be redefining music television as the channel where the viewer truly controls the music."
Viewers in the United States, England, and Puerto Rico have been attracted to The Box's unique interactive features which allows them to select from an on-screen menu of hundreds of music videos -- ranging from rap to heavy metal, top 40 to country -- by simply dialing a billable 900-phone number. Another bonus of The Box is that the play list for the earth-based delivery systems can be customized by region to tailor to specific musical tastes. The service is now carried on more than 100 cable systems in nearly 30 states.
The Box has been credited with helping a host of new acts gain stardom. These include Green Jelly, Arrested Development, Digable Planet, and Snow. Also, Philadelphia's Ruff House Records recording artists Kris Kross and Cypress Hill, as well as Boyz II Men have been featured on the channel.
"The Philadelphia area is and has always been one of the hotbeds of music in America, a real trendsetter," said Gerry Lenfest, president of the Lenfest Group, which owns Starnet. "And we will continue to develop a tremendous following in the Philadelphia market and to have viewers here greatly influence the music we see and hear on the channel."
Satellite distribution of The Box follows the recent announcement that Starnet/CEA II partners have entered into an agreement in principle to purchase a controlling interest in Video Jukebox Network, Inc. (NASDAQ: JUKE) (VJN), which owns and operates The Box. Under that agreement, McGlade would become acting CEO of VJN and Lenfest would become chairman of the board.
Starnet also operates Nustar, a service delivering time-specific, tune-in promotions to more than 24 million cable homes and The Barker Channel, a pay-per-view promotion channel, among its many offerings to the cable industry.
The Lenfest Group also owns a number of cable systems, including the Suburban cable franchises, in the Philadelphia suburbs and systems in the East Bay of San Francisco. Lenfest programming services is about to launch the Delaware Valley's first all-news cable channel, Newschannel.
