WENDELL J. KNOX NAMED ABT ASSOCIATES' PRESIDENT; LED PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR DIVERSIFICATION; FIRM'S SALES TOP $100 MILLION
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Abt Associates, internationally known for applied research and consulting for government and industry, has appointed Wendell J. Knox, 44, as president. Walter R. Stellwagen, Ph.D., who steps down as president in June but remain board vice-chairman, also announced Abt's sales exceeded $100 million for the first time in FY 1992.
Abt is a leader in research and cost-effective design of government programs and procedures on issues including health, housing, education, child care, criminal justice and international economic development. Clients include the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services, State, and Education; state governments; and USAID-sponsored programs in Africa, the Americas, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Asia.
Knox, presently executive vice-president, launched and oversaw Abt's diversification into related international and private sector services, particularly quality management and measurement of customer satisfaction, health care, environment, and agribusiness. Representative private sector clients include Chemical Bank, CIGNA, Mass. Blue Cross, Searle, and Ford.
Knox has extensive research and consulting experience in quality management and urban development. Among other accomplishments, he: led the development and implementation of a customer-satisfaction measurement and management system for a major bank; conducted marketing studies for banks, including innovative electronic banking products for a moneycenter bank, and market intelligence systems for major regional banks in the South, Midwest and New England; and designed and led an assessment of Massachusetts' performance in fostering the development and expansion of minority-owned businesses and identifying strategies to improve performance.
Since 1990, Knox has been responsible for all line operations at Abt, including planning, marketing strategy, quality control, and achievement of revenue and profit goals. He joined the firm as a research analyst in 1969, and served as vice president and manager of Economics and Resources Management for 10 years, working on projects in labor economics, urban economic development and minority business, and international development.
Knox became manager of Abt's new Business Strategy Group in 1983, a senior vice president in 1985 and was elected a director in 1987. Abt's business consulting practice, established when Reagan Administration cuts led to a temporary decline in government contracts, now employs more than 75.
