 WEIRTON, W.Va., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The promotion of Mac S.


White Jr., to vice president-engineering and technology at Weirton Steel Corporation was announced by Herbert Elish, chairman and president.
 Formerly director of engineering, White succeeds John T. Gilmore, who is retiring. A veteran steel industry engineer, White for the past three years has had principal responsibilities of implementing Weirton's current capital facilities plan.
 "I am delighted to announce the appointment of Mr. White who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in a steel industry career spanning 30 years. He brings exceptional talent and experience to the position. White's intensive involvement in the design, equipment procurement, installation and start-up of major capital facilities certainly will contribute to a smooth transition of leadership in our engineering department," Elish said.
 White joined Weirton in 1989 as director of engineering following several years as director of project management for Italimpianti of America, Inc. In the latter position, he managed domestic and international steel projects from offices in the Pittsburgh area.
 In a 27-year career with U.S. Steel Corporation (1959-86), he managed and directed major capital projects at plants in Pittsburgh and Lorain-Cuyahoga, Ohio. As general manager of project engineering from 1984-86, he directed the engineering work for the commissioning of a new dual-strand continuous slab caster at the Gary Ind., works. He also served at the Homestead Works as general supervisor- construction engineering and as chief electrical engineer. White entered the engineering field in 1955 with Union Switch and Signal Company, Division of Westinghouse Airbrake.
 He received the bachelor of science in electrical engineering degree in 1955 from the University of Pittsburgh. White is a Pittsburgh native and registered engineer in the state of Pennsylvania. He and his wife have two children and make their home in the Pittsburgh area.
