WEIGHT WATCHERS ADOPTS RASPBERRY

 WEIGHT WATCHERS ADOPTS RASPBERRY
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Aug. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- At a sunset picnic

at the Detroit Zoo in honor of Weight Watchers' 30th anniversary, Florine Mark, president and CEO of the WW Group, Inc., the largest franchise of Weight Watchers International, announced to Khadejah Shelby, acting director of the Detroit Zoo, that Weight Watchers will adopt Raspberry, the new baby giraffe born June 8, 1992, at the Detroit Zoo, in connection with the zoo's Adopt an Animal Program.
According to Mark, "Raspberry has inspired so many of us working on this evening's event, we already feel close to him. We can't wait to celebrate his first birthday the Weight Watchers way."
More than 5,000 Weight Watchers members, their families and friends, attended the picnic. Lifetime Members and 100-pound losers were honored at special ceremonies. The event was a benefit for Dieters Feed the Hungry. Food, collected in cooperation with the Hunger Action Coalition, is being distributed to area food banks. The 4-foot-high cake that was specially baked and donated to Weight Watchers by Awrey's for this event was dismantled and sent to area food pantries, including the East Side Community Center, COTS, the Cass Community Center and the Veterans and Freeman Center.
"We're delighted to have this Weight Watchers event at the zoo," said Shelby. "It's a perfect match because zoo animals have weight problems, too. Their food is weighed and measured daily, with careful attention to nutritional requirements and caloric intake, just as with people."
Special recipe booklets, printed in honor of Raspberry and featuring Weight Watchers raspberry recipes, will be available free of charge to visitors at the Detroit Zoo through Labor Day. Weight Watchers hopes to make this an annual event.
The clowns participating in the Weight Watchers ZOO HAPPENING tonight (Friday, Aug. 21) were none other than members of the Weight Watchers AT WORK Department. The Weight Watchers AT WORK Program takes the Weight Watchers Program to the worksite and holds meetings primarily at lunchtime or before or after work.
"While losing weight is serious business, there should always be time for fun and enjoyment each day," said Mark. "We encourage our members and our staff to laugh and not take things too seriously."
