SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  -- The good weather news is that the beach is less than an hour away.

The blistering heat that has baked the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  for weeks will get only worse today as the National Weather Service predicts a high of 110, poor air quality and a high fire danger.

An excessive heat watch called for Friday by the weather service will remain in effect today -- and likely through the week as triple digits are expected to continue.

Health officials warn residents to stay indoors, particularly those with lung problems such as asthma. Power companies warn that excessive air-conditioning use is straining the system.

Southern California Edison Southern California Edison (or SCE Corp), the largest subsidiary of Edison International (NYSE: EIX), is the primary electricity supply company for much of Southern California. It provides 11 million people with electricity. , which serves the Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys, expects a record demand for power this weekend, breaking the record set last July 20. Residents are urged to conserve power, especially during peak afternoon hours.

In Santa Clarita, additional fire crews have moved in as temperatures rise and humidity drops.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD), serves unincorporated parts of Los Angeles County, as well as 58 cities and towns that choose to have the county provide fire and EMS services, including the City of La
 spokesman, said a strike team of five extra fire engines is in town in case of a brush fire. In addition, four more patrol units were sent to monitor fire-prone areas to report sparks before they become raging fires.

The state Department of Forestry also has sent in extra resources.
