WEEKEND FESTIVALS RHYME ON THE RANGE.

Cowboys are alive and well in Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, , and this weekend they'll not only kick up some dust on the trail but also sing and read poetry - or at least spin a few yarns about the Old West.

The 10th annual Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival is an opportunity to saddle up with performers such as Sourdough Slim and see the roping tricks of Benny Martinez on three stages at the historic Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio while eating grub, doing a little do-si-do and enjoying other cowboy games.

There are a number of special events scheduled today through Sunday, including a trail ride (bring your own horse), a walking tour of Melody Ranch and its museum (filled with movie memorabilia and cowboy artifacts artifacts

), a concert with R.W. Hampton at the haunted William S. Hart Mansion, a motor coach tour of the site of the St. Francis Dam The St. Francis Dam was a concrete gravity-arch dam, designed to create a reservoir as part of the Los Angeles Aqueduct. The dam was located 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Los Angeles, California, near the city of Santa Clarita.  disaster and a concert by the Grammy Award-winning Riders in the Sky.

Children will have carnival games, pony rides, and arts and crafts arts and crafts, term for that general field of applied design in which hand fabrication is dominant. The term was coined in England in the late 19th cent. as a label for the then-current movement directed toward the revivifying of the decorative arts.  to keep them busy, while parents listen to the concerts and visit the Art, Gear and Dry Goods Show on Main Street of the Western town that you'll recognize from numerous films and TV shows. Before you ride into the sunset, take a stroll along nearby San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the  near Newhall Avenue to see the Walk of Western Stars in downtown Newhall, where the newest stars to be remembered in bronze are the late Hopalong Cassidy (William Boyd), Bruce Dern, Buck Taylor and Riders in the Sky.

Since most of the action is outside, wear cowboy couture and practice walking with spurs so nobody will call you a city slicker.

COWBOY POETRY MUSIC FESTIVAL: Melody Ranch, Santa Clarita. To get there from the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

, take the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. Originally built as U.S. Highway 99, it was re-signed as Interstate 5 in 1964.  (5) and exit at Lyons Avenue. Proceed east two miles and turn left onto San Fernando Road; then right onto 13th Street; cross the railroad tracks to the shuttle site. 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Rain or shine. $10 for adults; $5 for ages 3 to 11; under 3 are free. Walking tour of Melody Ranch is $25; museum admission is $5. Food, souvenirs, pony rides and some concerts priced separately. SECOND ANNUAL PASADENA CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL: Welcome spring and the Japanese celebration of Sakura Matsuri matsuri

Civil or religious festival in Japan, especially a Shinto shrine festival. It traditionally has two parts: a solemn ritual of worship and a joyous celebration. The participants first purify themselves (see harai) by periods of abstinence and by bathing.
 beginning with opening ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and a cultural parade at 1 p.m. Sunday. In addition to experiencing the diverse Japanese-American culture through its food, music, dance, arts and crafts, fashions and martial arts, visitors can see the planting of 75 new cherry trees and their pretty pink blossoms, which is what the festival is all about - besides having fun. Victory Park, 2575 Paloma St. (at Altadena Drive), Pasadena. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Parking and admission are free. Handicapped accessible; no pets or alcohol.
