WEEKEND FESTIVALS HONORING BLACK HISTORY.


Kick off Black History Month with a variety of celebrations in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , including a kickoff at City Hall. The event will include the unveiling of the 2006 Black Heritage Stamp featuring Hattie McDaniel Hattie McDaniel (June 10, 1895 – October 26, 1952) was an American actress and the first black performer to win an Academy Award. She won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role of Mammy in Gone with the Wind (1939). , who played Mammy in 1939's ``Gone With the Wind.'' Community members from churches, local schools and more will be on hand for presentations and musical performances. The weekend will also feature a Black History Bus Tour that follows the progress of African-Americans in Los Angeles through sites including Sugar Hill, Central Avenue and Leimert Park. Anointed is a Contemporary Christian music duo consisting of siblings Steve and Da'dra Crawford. Their musical style includes elements of R&B, funk, and piano ballads.
 Visions' Praisefest 2006 and Gospel Explosion, featuring special guest actress and evangelist Maura Gale.

The opening ceremony takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday on the South Lawn at Los Angeles City Hall, 200 N. Spring St., Los Angeles. The bus tour will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday, and patrons must meet at 8 a.m. at the Consolidated Realty Board, 3725 Don Felipe Drive, Los Angeles. The Praisefest will take place 5 p.m. Saturday at Pilgrim M.B.C., 950 45th St., Los Angeles. Gospel Explosion will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday at Paradise Baptist Church, 5100 S. Los Angeles Fine Print Fair 2006: Vendor booths, exhibits and the sale of various fine-art posters. Also features food including free dessert with a meal at Pentimento pentimento (pĕn'təmĕn`tō), painter's term for the evidence in a work that the original composition has been changed. Often the opaque pigment with which the artist covered a mistake or unwanted beginnings will, with time or  (for Print Fair patrons only). A reception will feature 25 fine print dealers. Reception will take place 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and will cost $30, $50 for couples. Fair will take place 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission for the fair is free.
