WEEKEND EVENTS TO AID TOYS FOR TOTS CAR FANS, TELETHON HELPING BRIGHTEN KIDS' CHRISTMAS.

, a model airplane exhibit, and motorcycle and airplane ``toy runs'' Saturday will all collect toys for the U.S. Marine Corps' Toys for Tots Toys For Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which donates toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas. The program was founded in 1947 by Major Bill Hendricks.  gift program.

The events will help an effort aimed at collecting more than 40,000 toys for local youngsters.

The car show will run from noon to 5 p.m. at the Lancaster Marketplace, on Lancaster Boulevard west of the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. Radio station KCWR-FM (103.1) will do live broadcasts from the show.

People who donate a new, unwrapped toy will also get 20 percent off a purchase from Reed's Tastee's Fine Yogurt and Ice Cream.

The fourth annual Toys for Tots Telethon will get under way from noon to midnight at the Desert Inn Hotel, 44219 Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling . The show will be broadcast on KPAL-TV (Channel 23 for Jones Intercable customers).

Featured for the audience at the hotel will be games, prizes, giveaways, a moon bounce tent, entertainment ranging from choirs to a wrestling display, karaoke, and free hot dogs and cocoa. KPAL personality Herb Nero will host, and Santa Claus will also be on hand.

Marines will have on display Humvee military vehicles and will make dog tags for youngsters, Wavle said. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Antelope Valley Tailwinds remote-controlled model airplane club will put on a show at its flying field on Challenger Way at Avenue F.

The California City Airport will be a stop between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. bypilots and members of the Harley Owners Group The Harley Owners Group is a club for Harley-Davidson motorcycle owners. It is frequently known by its initials, HOG.

People can also drop off toys at Toys for Tots baskets placed at dozens of local businesses.

Toys for Tots campaign was started by a Marine major in 1947 in Los Angeles County and went nationwide in 1948, adopted by the Marine Corps Reserve, Wavle said. The program has collected more than 250 million toys over the years.

In the Antelope Valley, most of the toys will be given out by the Antelope Valley Boys & Girls Club and by the Grace Resource Center food bank. Needy families are directed to apply for toys from those two agencies, which are screening applicants, Wavle said.
