Allison had been attending Desert Sands Charter School since the beginning of the school year. The teen was a student at Lancaster High last year before opting for independent study, Lancaster High officials said.

Woodsworth was a junior at Desert Winds and had transferred there from Lancaster High, Johnson said. At Desert Winds, the teen excelled at writing and was told by his English teacher that he was one of the best writers she had ever seen in her teaching career.

Smith had attended Desert Winds but left after he turned 18, Johnson said.

Many students at Desert Winds did not know about the fatalities until they returned from their weekend break, Johnson said. Most of the approximately 150 students who attend afternoon classes at the West Valley campus know each other, Allison said.

``Any time a student passes away, we have more counseling services available for students,'' said Darren Hardy, a psychologist at Lancaster High.

The counselors are also made available to grieving teachers, said Desert Winds Principal Sala Simonds.

``It's just really sad,'' Simonds said. ``It's hard for the school to deal with.''
