So it was Saturday that Weaver posted his sixth victory in six tries by allowing no runs on just two hits in seven innings of an eventual 6-4 nail-biting victory over the Oakland Athletics “Philadelphia Athletics” redirects here. Weaver's outing ranked just slightly behind John Lackey's one-hit complete game Friday night. ``Everybody works off each other and that's what makes our rotation strong,'' Weaver said. ``You have to let it play out and hopefully you can go out and match what he did. Obviously it was pretty tough to match. I was just happy that everything went the way it did.'' Weaver might have fallen in line when comparing back-to-back starts, but the 6-0 start to his career has only a select few equals. He became the first major-league pitcher to win his first six starts since the Dodgers' Kaz Ishii in 2002. No Angels pitcher has ever won his first six starts. ``I think there are a lot of young pitchers that come up and they're not intimidated and they go out and make their pitches,'' manager Mike Scioscia There are other names Weaver is gaining on too, like Francisco Liriano Francisco Casillas Liriano (born October 26, 1983 in San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic) is a left handed Major League Baseball starting pitcher for the Minnesota Twins. Weaver's already rock-bottom ERA fell to 1.12 with seven more scoreless innings. The unflappable 23-year old has given up just one earned run over his past three major-league starts, a span of 21 innings. He gave up two walks with five strikeouts and didn't allow his second hit until Jay Paton pushed a single in to right field in the seventh inning. Mark Kotsay, who had the only hit off Lackey on Friday, had the first hit off Weaver with a single to center in the fourth inning. When asked to explain the outing and all of his early success, Weaver credited one name above all others. ``Obviously it helps with Napoli behind the plate,'' Weaver said. ``He's a big part of my success and I owe that to him. Over the year or so that I've been with him, he's become easy to throw pitches to. It's fun having him behind the plate. With the defense we had tonight and scoring some runs, everything has been coming together well.'' Despite a 6-0 Angels lead, though, this one started to slip away. Chone Figgins and Maicer Izturis led the Angels' charge at the top of the order. Figgins had four hits out of the leadoff spot and scored twice, while Izturis delivered a home run among his two hits out of the No. 2 spot. Figgins also stole his 30th base, joining Gary Pettis (1984-86) and Luis Polonia (1991-93) as the only Angels to steal at least 30 bases in three consecutive seasons. But all that hard work was nearly lost in the eighth inning after Weaver left the game. Reliever Brendan Donnelly struggled again by allowing four of the six batters he faced to reach base on hits. He was relieved by Francisco Rodriguez, who gave up two hits of his own as the A's pulled to within two runs. Rodriguez ended the eighth by striking out Bobby Crosby with the tying run on first base. He gave up a two-out double in the ninth before Kotsay popped out to end the game. He recorded his 20th save in 20chances. The only negative this night was the slight touch of biceps tightness Weaver felt in his right arm, similar to what he felt in his previous start at Seattle. ``It's nothing I haven't felt before, it's just a matter of throwing through it and getting over the hump,'' Weaver said. ``I felt it before in the middle of the college season. ... It's nothing to be worried about.'' doug.padilla@sgvn.com (626) 962-8811, Ext. 2731 CAPTION(S): photo, box Photo: Angels starter Jered Weaver gave up two hits and had five strikeouts against Oakland on Saturday.
