WEATHER PUTS HEAT ON COURSES.Byline: JILL PAINTER GOLF If you played golf in the Valley last weekend, you're probably one of two things: crazy or insane INSANE. Hopefully, it won't get too hot but we stay open regardless of how hot or how slow it is.'' Greg Thomas John Gregory Thomas (born August 12, 1960, Trebanos, Wales) is a former England cricketer who played in 5 Tests and 3 ODIs from 1986 to 1987. , a Northridge resident, loves playing in hot weather. He golfs at Knollwood Country Club every Saturday at about 6:30 a.m. On Sunday, he hit the driving range twice, once in the morning and later in the afternoon. He was the only guy playing on the top level of the two- level driving range. ``It's hot out there,'' said Thomas said. ``For me, I love the heat. I was born and raised in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, . I like the heat. I'm totally OK with this. No problem. Bring it on.'' Thomas, a self-professed diehard, said while he was at the driving range, there was an announcement that the first tee was wide open if anyone wanted to play. He couldn't ever remember hearing such a thing. Canoga Park resident John Call didn't play over the weekend. He usually plays in the cooler temperatures of Tahoe while on vacation and enjoys the breeze from the lake. There's only two times he'll play in the Valley. ``I would've waited until the first thing in the morning or late in the evening,'' Call said. ``The good thing is that a course like Verdugo has lights. That'd be the ideal way of going. As far as a big course -- no way. It's too hot.'' Verdugo Hills Golf Course and Van Nuys -- par-3 courses -- have lights. You can tee it up as late as 7:30 p.m. at Van Nuys and about 7 p.m. at Verdugo if you want to play all 18 holes. Business wasn't booming during the day at Van Nuys on Saturday or Sunday, but it was hopping early and late. Golfers still were on the course at 9 p.m. on Sunday. Joe Tugliese, an assistant pro at Woodley Lakes Golf Course, didn't notice much of a difference in turnout over the weekend. Woodley Lakes -- an 18-hole course -- has lights as well. ``They were still coming out,'' Tugliese said. ``It was still pretty packed, and it was cooking. I think this is unusual. I think it will probably cool down like it did (Monday) morning.'' A man from out of town went to Woodley to play Sunday afternoon. He rented a bag from Tugliese, then bought sunscreen sunscreen /sun·screen/ (-skren) a substance applied to the skin to protect it from the effects of the sun's rays. sun·screen n. and lip balm balm, name for any balsam resin and for several plants, e.g., the bee balm. balm Any of several fragrant herbs of the mint family, particularly Melissa officinalis (balm gentle, or lemon balm), cultivated in temperate climates for its fragrant but not a hat. Tugliese saw him a bit later and was compelled to offer advice. ``As he was sitting outside, I said, `I don't want to tell you anything, but maybe you should wear a hat,''' Tugliese said. ``He agreed it was probably a good idea.'' After golfers finished their rounds, Tugliese said they get to the pro shop and remarked about how cool it is inside, even though it's about 73 or 74 degrees. But that was a 30-degree swing from outdoors over the weekend. At Van Nuys, Roberts noticed more people milling around the air- conditioned golf shop. ``They take their time in the pro shop,'' Roberts said.
