WEATHER EFFECTS SEASON'S FIRST WINTER STORM INUNDATES AREA RAIN EXPECTED TO TAPER OFF.

QUARTZ HILL - A powerful winter storm dropped more than an inch of rain on the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

Rainfall totaled 1.1 inches by Thursday afternoon, the Palmdale Water District said. Mountain High ski resort near Wrightwood said two to three feet of snow had fallen by 1 p.m. Thursday.

In Quartz Hill, runoff from the storm threatened the home of sisters Joan and Bonnie Axe in the 43100 block of 52nd Street West.

Joan Axe called 911 early Thursday when water rose to within an inch of the sandbags she had piled outside her doors.

Fire crews placed additional sandbags and dug trenches to divert the water flow from the Axes' yard and from neighboring yards.

The house has flooded twice before - once in the late 1980s, and again last winter, Joan Axe said. Her landlord has twice had to replace the flooring as well as much of the interior drywall, she said, and she still hasn't replaced the furniture damaged last year.

Axe blames her flooding on the lack of a drainage system Noun 1. drainage system - a system of watercourses or drains for carrying off excess water

``I nearly died trying to get those bags up,'' said Axe, who suffers from emphysema emphysema (ĕmfĭsē`mə), pathological or physiological enlargement or overdistention of the air sacs of the lungs.  what we would have done.''

Fire officials said digging a drainage ditch near the road would go a long way to divert flood water but may not completely solve the problem.

``The house is actually set lower than everything around it, so it's hard to say whether a trench would work,'' Meridth said.

Through today at least, county fire stations will hand out sand bags for residents who need them to protect their homes.
