WEAPONS BAN TO EXPIRE.

Byline: Lisa Friedman Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - Congress will not vote to extend a federal assault weapons ban The Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) was a subtitle of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, a federal law of the United States that included a prohibition on the sale to civilians of certain semi-automatic "assault weapons" manufactured after the date , Republican leaders said Wednesday, rejecting a last-ditch plea from supporters.

The 10-year ban, signed by President Clinton in 1994, outlaws 19 types of military-style assault weapons. A clause mandates that the ban expires at midnight Sunday unless Congress specifically reauthorized it, but Republican House and Senate leaders said they will not bring the bill up for a vote.

``I think the will of the American people An American people may be:

is consistent with letting it expire, so it will expire,'' said Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.

Added House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, ``We don't have the votes to pass an assault weapons ban and it will expire Monday and that's that.''
