What's it like being a teen today?

The young people on the 20Below Team help answer that question every Monday Monday: see week.  in The Register-Guard through their insightful columns and artwork.

 writers and illustrators for the 2007-08 school year. You must be at least a freshmen in high school but no older than 20 on Sept. 4, 2007. Here's how to apply:

To apply as a writer

First, write a one-page letter - please type it and print it from a computer - telling us about yourself and why you think you would be a great member of the 20Below Team. Tell us about your passions, politics and issues that interest you. And show us you're a regular 20Below reader.

At the top of the first page, put your name, your current grade and age, the name of your current school (and where you'll be going to school in the fall, if different), your address, telephone number and an e-mail address See Internet address.

Next, write a great, suitable-for-publication 20Below story in 700 words or less. It could be a column, an essay, a news story - whatever you think would be a good fit for 20Below.

The story can be in the first person, but it doesn't have to be. The work should show readers your teen perspective. Give us your best work, because portions of your cover letter and your story will be considered for publication.

Finally, on a separate sheet of paper, give us five good ideas for 20Below stories. Tell us in one sentence why each idea would appeal to readers.

To apply as an illustrator

We are looking for artists who can draw illustrations to accompany stories.

Write a one-page letter - please type it and print it from a computer - telling us about yourself and why you think you'd be a great addition to the 20Below Team.

At the top of the first page, put your name, your current grade and age, the name of your current school (and where you'll be going to school in the fall, if different), your address, your telephone number and an e-mail address where we can reach you.

Include a portfolio of at least five examples of your work, with your name and address on the back of each sample. Send color copies, preferably pref·er·a·ble
