WDIV-TV REPORTS SUCCESSFUL 1993 EASTER SEAL TELETHON

DETROIT, March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Metro-Detroiters raised $1,059,769.00 during the WDIV-TV broadcast of the 1993 Easter Seal Telethon, WDIV-TV said today. The Telethon began Saturday, March 6, at 11:30 p.m. and continued until Sunday, March 7, concluding at 7 p.m.
Local segments of the Telethon were hosted by the "Newsbeat's" Mort Crim and Chuck Gaidica. Legendary comedian Soupy Sales flew to Detroit to host the overnight segment of the Telethon. From 1:30 a.m. until 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 7, Sales hosted the "Soupython." During the six hours, Sales greeted special guests and hosted vintage "Lunch with Soupy" programs.
Nationally, the 1993 Easter Seal Telethon raised $47,721,069.00. Last year, the Telethon generated $46 million nationally with $1 million of that total being raised in the Detroit area.
Rosemary Ging, executive director of the Easter Seal Society of Oakland County, expressed her gratitude to the public. "Every year the Telethon kicks off the spring season and gives renewed hope that Easter Seals services will be made available to those who need them. This is the 21st year that metro-Detroiters have given generously, and we are extremely grateful."
In the tri-county area, the Easter Seal Society provided services to 42,000 individuals during the past year. Ninety percent of all funds raised remain in Michigan, and 80 percent directly support services for the disabled.
WDIV is a Post-Newsweek Station and the NBC affiliate in Detroit.
