WCIT 2008 kicks off : The world of ICT converges on Kuala Lumpur; Five days of Congress, business matching, exhibition and ancillary activities; Major trade and investment deals to be signed.
WCIT 2008 is a premier global ICT forum that brings together global leaders in business, government and academia to impact economic and social development through the exchange of policies and ideas on technology. Often billed as the Olympics of ICT, WCIT 2008 is themed, "Enable, Empower and Enrich" to reflect ICT's potential to enable businesses, empower societies, and enrich economies.
The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre is the venue for this event, which has drawn 3,000 delegates from 90 countries worldwide.
The highlight of WCIT 2008 is the Congress that features more than 100 high-profile personalities who will address a range of pressing issues such as the impact of ICT on outsourcing, education, innovation, technopreneurship and the future of the Internet.
In relation to program content, the WCIT 2008 edition will introduce the Great Debate, where distinguished personalities will field and offer their opinions on current ICT issues, CIO-CEO Panels to bring vendors and buyers together, and Ministerial Panels to discuss the role of ICT in driving economic and social growth. These new elements to the program are aimed at ensuring the congress
remains relevant and interesting.
Keynote speakers include some of the most respected and admired names in industry and government, for example celebrity genome scientist Dr Craig Venter whose work in genetic engineering is exciting the world and Google Chief Internet Evangelist Dr Vinton Cerf, widely acknowledged as the "father of the internet".
Cerf and Venter join such illustrious names as Microsoft's Bill Gates who will address the biennial global ICT forum via holographic technology Intel's Dr Craig Barrett; Dr Hamadoun Toure of the International Telecommunications Union; Dr Robert Atkinson of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation; Dr Rajendra Pachauri, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Prof Heizo Takenaka, Director of Keio University's Global Security Research Institute; Dr
Robert Bishop, Adviser to the Blue Brain Project; Dr Mark Mobius, Executive Chairman of Templeton Asset Management and many other local personalities.
WCIT 2008 also incorporates a first-ever World Congress online business matching portal which is expected to generate some 2,000 structured business-to-business (B2B) meetings involving the event's corporate partners, exhibitors and delegates.
The third component of WCIT 2008 is an exhibition at WCIT 2008 with some 500 participants showcasing their latest ICT products and services. Some 44,000 visitors are expected to visit the 100,000 sq ft of exhibition space.The event will include a series of related activities to provide delegates with an all-round experience. They comprise a Golf Tournament at Saujana Golf & Country Club, a Spouse Program and various technical and city tours.
WCIT 2008 is fast becoming a platform where multinational companies will be sealing major trade and investment deals worth more than USD 100 million.
Jointly organized by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and the Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia (PIKOM), with the support of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia, WCIT 2008 is the flagship event of the World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA), a consortium of 73 international ICT organizations whose members comprise more than 90% of the global IT market.

WCIT 2008 incorporates a three-day congress to address global impact issues, a Link Program for business matching that includes a series of structured business-to-business (B2B), business-to-government (B2G) and business-to-industry (B2I) meetings, an ICT exhibition, a debate on current ICT issues and ancillary activities like tours, golf tournament, F1 experience and a spouse program.
