WAYNE'S OTHER LEGACY COWBOYS, CANCER SURVIVORS ALL HEROES AT ODYSSEY BALL.

When her friend was successfully treated for melanoma cancer four years ago, Encino resident Shirley Lipstone knew she wanted to support the place where he had been treated - the John Wayne Cancer Institute.

She's now president of the institute's auxiliary and heading up its 21st Annual Odyssey Ball, set for Saturday, April 8, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills Beverly Hills, city (1990 pop. 31,971), Los Angeles co., S Calif., completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles; inc. 1914. The largely residential city is home to many motion-picture and television personalities. .

This year's theme will be ``Our Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys.''

, her friend since childhood, was diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Winkler, the father of five small children, was living in Washington D.C. at the time and commuted to the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Tourism and retailing are important, and the city has motion-picture, biotechnology, and software industries.  twice a month for treatments.

The melanoma was successfully treated by Dr. Don Morton Don Morton was the head football coach of the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1987 to 1989. At Wisconsin he compiled a 6-27 (.182) record. He was also the head football coach of the University of Tulsa from 1985 to 1986. At Tulsa, he compiled a 12-9 (.571) record.  at the institute, and Winkler then received medication that's designed to keep the melanoma from returning. Winkler now lives in Denver and is cancer-free, Lipstone said.

Each year at the ball, a cancer survivor is honored. Last year, Peggy Maddox of Orange County was recognized. She is a 30-year survivor of melanoma cancer. In 2004, Lisa Bronson of Studio City was honored. She had been successfully treated at the institute for breast cancer a few years earlier.

Some celebrities will also be honored. Dean Smith, an actor who was in several movies with John Wayne, will receive the Special Service Award. In 2002, he created the Dean Smith Celebrity Rodeo rodeo (rō`dēō, rōdā`ō), public exhibition of the skill of cowboys in various activities. Events include riding broncos, riding steers, "bulldogging" steers, roping and tying steers and calves, the use of the lasso, and  in Graham, Texas Graham is a city in Young County, Texas, USA. Graham is still one of the few towns to still have an operational drive-in theater. The population was 8,716 at the 2000 census.
