WAVY LAY'S SUPER BOWL COMMERCIAL FINDS CHILD STAR ELIJAH WOOD WAGING "WAVY LAY'S CHALLENGE" TO SUPER BOWL BOUND TROY AIKMAN

FORMER VICE PRESIDENT DAN QUAYLE FEATURED IN CAMEO APPEARANCE
PLANO, Texas, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Frito-Lay, Inc. will debut a new commercial for Wavy Lay's Potato Chips during the Wavy Lay's Super Bowl Halftime Show on Super Bowl XXVIII on Sunday, January 30 on NBC-TV. The commercial, which will be shown one time only, will air just prior to the Halftime Show, which features the celebrated reunion of Wynonna and Naomi Judd, who will join the Show's other country music stars including Clint Black, Travis Tritt and Tanya Tucker. Wavy Lay's is the official title sponsor of the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
In the :60-second commercial, child star Elijah Wood wages the "Wavy Lay's Challenge" -- Betcha' Can't Eat Just One -- in a clever, enterprising fashion to a host of well-known personalities including Super Bowl contender and Dallas Cowboys' quarterback Troy Aikman, and former U.S. Vice President Dan Quayle, who makes a cameo appearance in the spot. The commercial was filmed at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, where the championship football game will be played.
"We've enlisted an unrivaled all-star lineup for our new Wavy Lay's commercial that promises to be one of the biggest plays of Super Bowl Sunday," said Brock Leach, Frito-Lay Vice President of Brand Marketing. "With great ingenuity, Elijah Wood not only stumps one of the most elite quarterbacks in the National Football League, but is also able to place a friendly wager with former Vice President Dan Quayle. You won't want to miss the action when the `Challenge' takers suffer the consequences."
First spotted in one of the last rows of the Georgia Dome on Super Bowl Sunday, Wood begins to issue the "Wavy Lay's Challenge" to various spectators who are blocking his view. The 12-year-old star is determined to win his way to the best seat in the stadium -- and he is quite successful as losers of the "Challenge" have to abdicate their seats.
Before long, Wood finds himself placing a friendly wager with Mr. Quayle, who is sitting in the stadium's first row on the 50-yard line. In good humor, Mr. Quayle loses the bet and trades seats with Wood. The young actor, who is now determined to literally play in the Super Bowl, sets his sights on Aikman, who is the signal caller for the Dallas Cowboys, the National Football Conference Champions and contenders for the Super Bowl championship.
In the very next scene, Wood fearlessly makes the bet that Aikman "Can't Eat Just One" Wavy Lay's. Aikman takes the "Challenge" -- and winds up on the bench watching Wood -- dressed in Aikman's uniform -- calling the next play in the huddle on the playing field of Super Bowl XXVIII.
As title sponsor of the Wavy Lay's Super Bowl Halftime Show, the brand will debut its commercial just prior to the Halftime Show, with opening and closing billboards featuring Wood. Wood will also be spotted on stage during the Halftime show, reinforcing the brand message that the Wavy Lay's Challenge can land Wood anywhere he pleases.
Both Mr. Quayle and Wood are donating their proceeds from the commercial to charitable organizations.
The commercial, which was created and produced by BBDO New York, supports the national rollout of Wavy Lay's, the new, wavy-cut potato chip expected to drive America's favorite salty snack category, potato chips, well beyond the $4.5 billion in annual sales in 1994.
Frito-Lay is the U.S. snack food division of PepsiCo and the country's largest snack company, registering more than $4 billion in sales in 1993. Eight of the company's brands are among the 10 largest-selling brands in the U.S. and the company holds approximately half the share of the entire U.S. snack chip industry.
