Coach Robert Radnoti knew his team had talent, and he believed they would be legitimate contenders for the Div. I title at the state meet in Fresno, but he needed his girls to relax, forget about the sport for a while, bond as a team.

Nearly nine months later, the Lancers are defending state champions, and Radnoti is preparing for his first year as cross country and track and field coach at Pepperdine.

``I haven't been able to wipe the smile off of my face since I got the Pepperdine job,'' said Radnoti, who replaced Dick Kampmann this summer after eight years at Thousand Oaks. ``Next to getting married and having kids, this is one of the greatest things to happen to me. ...
