WATERY GAS STALLS 55 CARS, STRANDS DRIVERS.

Byline: Terri Hardy Daily News Staff Writer

A case of bad gas idled at least 55 motorists citywide, and left the Atlantic Richfield Co. with some explaining to do Wednesday.

The problem was traced to a tankload of gasoline contaminated contaminated,

"I was filling up my tank and I heard a bunch of ruckus from people who were having problems with their cars," said Linda Kimmer, who filled her car up at a station late Tuesday in Sylmar.

"All of a sudden, my car just stopped," she said.

Arco spokesman Scott Loll said 55 cars broke down after customers pumped the regular unleaded gasoline. Twenty breakdowns were reported in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Arco will pay for all needed car repairs and car rentals, and will reimburse customers affected for any work time lost, Loll said.

"We're very sorry this has disrupted our customers' lives and caused problems," he said.

The contamination was isolated, Loll said, and the gasoline was removed from the pumps.

"This kind of thing only happens on the rare occasion," said Jan Speelman, executive director of the Automotive Trade Organizations of California. "People should not be afraid to buy Arco gasoline."
