Nov. 6 to Jan. 23 for Southern San Joaquin Valley and Balance of State zones. Oct. 11 to Jan. 16 for Colorado River Zone. Northeastern California Zone is Oct. 9 to Nov. 21 for white-fronted and cackling cack·le

For Southern San Joaquin Valley, Northeastern California and Balance of State zones, the daily bag limit is three. Up to three may be white geese and up to two may be dark geese - of which only one may be a cackling goose. Possession limit: double the daily bag limit. Limits for the Colorado River Zone are the same as Southern California, except that the cackling goose stipulation does not apply.

AMERICAN COOT, COMMON MOORHEN

Oct. 10 to Jan. 17 for Southern California, Southern San Joaquin Valley and Balance of State zones. Colorado River Zone is Oct. 9 to Jan. 17. Northeastern California Zone is Saturday through Jan. 17.

Notes: Hunting of Aleutian Canada geese is prohibited.

An annual resident hunting license is $28.10 or $7.10 for juniors ages 15 and younger. A required state duck stamp is $10.50, and a federal migratory bird-hunting stamp is $15.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates the continental fall duck flight - an index to predict the total number of ducks that will fly south come autumn - should be about 94 million birds, up 13 percent over 1998, and goose numbers also have increased significantly. However, while scaup numbers increased over 1998, they are still below 50-year averages; biologists don't understand the cause for the decline.
