Hunting Season: Oct. 11 to Jan. 18 for Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , Southern San Joaquin Valley Noun 1. San Joaquin Valley - a vast valley in central California known for its rich farmland
Calif., California, Golden State, CA - a state in the western United States on the Pacific; the 3rd largest state; known for earthquakes
 and balance of the state.

Limits: Bag and possession limit: Seven per day; 14 in possession. Daily bag-limit makeup: Up to seven mallards but not more than two females, three pintails, one canvasback canvasback: see duck.
canvasback

Diving duck (Aythya valisineria), one of the most popular game birds. The male weighs about 3 lb (1.4 kg).
and two redheads of either sex.

Comments: Season looks bright; duck numbers in the fall flight forecast have never been this great, better even than 1996's 40-year high. The pintail pintail

Any of four species (genus Anas, family Anatidae) of sleek, long-tailed, long-necked dabbling ducks that are swift fliers and popular game birds. The common, or northern, pintail (A.
, which hasn't had strong counts in recent years, came up 30 percent this year. Redheads and canvasbacks should be in good supply, too.

GEESE

(Southland)

Hunting season: Oct. 18 to Jan. 18 for Southern California.

Limits: Bag limit and makeup: five per day; three may be white geese and two may be dark geese, but only one of those may be a cackling goose The Cackling Goose (Branta hutchinsii), colloquially (and incorrectly) Lesser or Small Canada/Canadian Goose in North America, belongs to the genus Branta of black geese, which contains species with largely black plumage, distinguishing them from the grey . Possession limit and makeup: eight; six may be white geese and two may be dark geese.

Comments: All populations are in good shape. Los Angeles and Orange counties are not goose friendly. Imperial County is productive, as are spots surrounding the cities of Riverside, Chino Chino (chē`nō), city (1990 pop. 59,682), San Bernardino co., S Calif.; founded 1887, inc. 1910. It is the business and processing center of a diversified farming (notably dairying) area.  and San Diego.

GEESE

(balance of state)

Hunting season: Nov. 1 to Jan. 18 for Southern San Joaquin Valley and balance of the state.

Limits: Bag limit and makeup: three per day; three may be white geese and two may be dark geese, but only one of those may be a cackling goose. Possession limit: six.

Comments: The take in these regions are far greater than in the Southland, as overall numbers are higher. Most are harvested in Colusa County. In past years, numbers of white-front geese have been depressed due to high harvests; counts have rebounded with stricter hunting limits and a shortened season. The Sacramento Valley holds most white-fronts.(ub)COMMON SNIPE: Hunting season: Statewide, Saturday through Jan. 18.

Limits: eight per day; 16 in possession.

Comments: Prefers marshlands, and the West's dry climate and lack of spring rain might result in a weaker flight. A small, very rapid, irregular flier, it is a challenging game bird to pursue. Is the only remaining shorebird legal to hunt.

AMERICAN COOT, COMMON MOORHEN

BLACK BRANT

Hunting season: Statewide, Nov. 1-30.

Limits: Bag limit: two per day; four in possession.

Comments: Have historically wintered in San Diego area. Hunted from shore or boats, especially sculls, over decoys set up in saltwaters. Different than hunting ducks and geese; shooters need tidal charts and salt is corrosive to guns.

Notes: Hunting of Aleutian geese is prohibited.
