WATER POLO NOTEBOOK: HISTORY LESSON NOT NECESSARY.Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer Familiarity abounds for the two local teams remaining in the Southern Section boys' water polo water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. The object of the game is to maneuver, by head, feet, or hand, a leather-covered ball 27 to 28 in. playoffs, but change is what La Canada and Harvard-Westlake of Studio City want more than anything when they play today in semifinals. Div. III top seed La Canada wants to avoid a repeat of last year, when the Spartans were upset in the semifinals as the No. 1 seed. La Canada faces Almont League champion Montebello at 5:30 p.m. at Pasadena City College. Harvard-Westlake, seeded fourth in Div. I, will try to overcome a Long Beach Wilson team that has made a habit of beating the Wolverines in the postseason, including last year's championship game. The teams meet at 7 p.m. at the William Wollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine. La Canada (21-9) and Harvard-Westlake (26-4) defeated their semifinal opponents during the regular season but know better than to read too much into that. Harvard-Westlake beat Wilson (28-2) during the regular season last year, then was toppled as the No. 1 seed in the final. ``Playoffs are playoffs,'' La Canada coach Larry Naeve said. ``Anything can happen. We beat Glendale in the regular season before, then they beat us in the playoffs. And we remember what happened last year. ... (We) want to get out of the semis. That's our goal.''
