WATCHDOGS CLEAR MAILER BY GREUEL.

A campaign oversight commission said Friday it won't support a complaint from Assemblyman Tony Cardenas Tony Cardenas served in the California State Assembly. In the Assembly, he had the powerful position of chair of the Budget Committee. He is now a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 6th district, which includes parts of the San Fernando Valley.  about a political mailer issued by rival City Council candidate Wendy Greuel Wendy Greuel is President Pro Tempore of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 2nd District. Greuel was elected in 2002 to fill the remainder of the term of Councilman Joel Wachs. She was elected in her own right in 2003 and reelected in 2007. .

The city Campaign Watch Commission, sponsored by the League of Women Voters League of Women Voters, voluntary public service organization of U.S. citizens. Organized in 1920 in Chicago as an outgrowth of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, it had as its original nucleus the leaders of the latter organization.  of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , concluded that the mailer did not try to mislead voters by criticizing Cardenas for accepting a contribution from an Indian ``gambling casino.''

Cardenas argued that the contribution was from a specific American Indian tribal nation and that he later returned the funds.

Cardenas also argued that the mailer falsely implied that Greuel, rather than Cardenas, had been endorsed by Los Angeles police and firefighters groups. The commission said the mailer made no such claim and only indicated endorsements by individuals.

The mailer was issued before the Dec. 11 special election in the 2nd Council District in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
. Cardenas and Greuel were the top vote-getters in the three-way race and will meet again in a March runoff.
