WATCH OUT : CLOCK-STOPPING TIMEPIECES LET YOU COUNT THE MINUTES OF THOSE LAZY DAYS OF SUMMER.

Byline: Barbara De Witt De Witt, uninc. town (1990 pop. 8,244), Onondaga co., central N.Y., a residential suburb of Syracuse.  Daily News Staff Writer

Summertime, and the watching's easy.

For those days you're off the clock - or wish you were - unbuckle your work watch and strap on some fun.

Suddenly you're a kid again, keeping time with Mickey and Minnie, Tigger, Taz and Tweety and all your other cartoon heroes. And don't forget those new toys with bells and whistles A slang English term for exceptional features in some product. Watch manufacturers like Timex already have enhanced watches with a cool blue night-light feature at the push of a button, and this spring the company has introduced stuffed animal

Armitron, another lower-priced watchmaker, has designed a fresh collection of Tweety and Sylvester designs in girlie-pink plastic and man-size faces on brown leather straps, as well as colorful Crayola watches for boomers who remember the debut of the 50-crayon box with a built-in sharpener.

Fossil, a relative newcomer that's been big on nostalgia in both its design and packaging, has added yet another novelty line. This spring it introduced mini-watches with dangling heart, lock, star, moon and butterfly charms, plus charm bracelets with a dangling watch.

More up-to-the minute ideas are coming from clothing manufacturers.

It is distinguished from the south magnetic pole. The South Pole was reached by Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer, in 1911. See Antarctica.  and Meridian.

Nautica, the menswear manufacturer, also has a new line of diver-style watches. Among the collection are white faces and sport rings in brights such as orange and green, equipped with Indiglo night-lights for weekend camp-outs or office brownouts.

Last year the Joe Boxer underwear company ticked us off with yellow ``happy face'' pocket watches. This year the pocket watch fad continues with faces that say, ``You're getting sleepy,'' and a new wrist watch collection called Floaties which has rubber ducks floating in water.

Beyond the pool toys are new Joe Boxer theme watches, such as ``Which Comes First?'' featuring a rooster rooster

With all that ``Happy Days'' nostalgia brightening up our wrists, the new Hush Puppies watches should be a shoe-in. The hot-again suede shoe company has signed a timepiece licensing agreement with Prime Time Watch Co. to make simple designs in bright colors for late summer. And, yes, you'll be face-to-face with that famous little long-eared hound dog from the shoe ads.
