WASTE MANAGEMENT, INC. STOCKHOLDERS CHANGE NAME TO WMX TECHNOLOGIES, INC., RE-ELECT THREE DIRECTORS

OAKBROOK, Ill., May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The stockholders of Waste Management, Inc. (NYSE: WMX) today approved by a wide margin a previously announced proposal to change the company's name to WMX Technologies, Inc. The company will retain the name Waste Management, Inc. for use by its North American solid waste operations.
WMX Technologies, Inc. consists of eight operating companies, which includes the four Waste Management, Inc. solid waste recycling, collection and disposal units; and four publicly traded, majority-owned subsidiaries, Chemical Waste Management, Inc., Wheelabrator Technologies Inc., Waste Management International plc and a new company, Rust International Inc. Another unit, WMX Technology and Services, Inc., comprises the corporate headquarters staff that provides support to the eight operating companies.
In another action, stockholders re-elected three members to the company's board of directors. Re-elected to three-year terms were Donald F. Flynn, chief executive officer of Discovery Zone, Inc.; Peer Pedersen, chairman of the board of the Chicago law firm of Pedersen & Houpt, P.C.; and Phillip B. Rooney, president and chief operating officer of the company and chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Wheelabrator Technologies Inc.
An individual stockholder's proposal calling for a fixed compensation ceiling on salaries of Company executive officers and directors was overwhelmingly defeated by stockholders.
