WASHINGTON STEEL SHIPS FIRST STAINLESS PLATE ORDER

WASHINGTON, Pa., Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Washington Steel announced today it has shipped its first order of cut stainless steel plate.
"This first delivery comes only eight weeks after announcing our entry into the cut-to-length stainless plate market," said T. Grant John, president, Washington Steel. "While our parent, Lukens Inc., has been the nation's largest stainless plate producer as a converter for other manufacturers, this order marks Washington's initial thrust into a growing industry segment."
The truckload of .375-inch plate mill plate was delivered to O'Neal Steel Inc.'s Evansville, Ind., service center. The 72-inch-wide plate was cut to lengths of 244 to 252 inches. O'Neal Steel, headquartered in Birmingham, Ala., is one of America's largest steel distributors with 22 service centers across the country.
"Washington Steel's stainless plate product line will expand rapidly as Lukens' Steckel Mill Advanced Rolling Technology (SMART) system comes on line at Conshohocken in late 1994," said John. "When combined with a new Vacuum Oxygen Decarburization system at Lukens Steel's Coatesville melt shop, we'll have the large slab production capability to produce and roll stainless plate coil up to 5/8-inch thick by 96 inches wide."
Washington Steel is a leading producer of stainless steel sheet, strip and continuous mill products. It is a subsidiary of Lukens Inc. (NYSE: LUC), a Fortune 500 company whose operating units also supply carbon, alloy and clad plate steels and industrial products and services.
