WASHINGTON MUTUAL SAVINGS BANK INTRODUCES TOLL-FREE TUTORING HOT LINE
 FOR ONE-TO-ONE TUTORING PROGRAM
SEATTLE, Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- It is now possible for Northwest residents to personally improve the classroom education in their local schools.
Washington Mutual Savings Bank introduced today a toll-free tutoring hot line for its One-to-One Tutoring Program.
By calling 1-800-433-0121, people can become volunteer tutors in schools throughout Washington and the Greater Portland area. Or schools in need of tutors can call the hot line to request volunteers.
The One-to-One Tutoring Program was announced Dec. 6, 1991. Whenever a customer takes out a loan or opens a new account with the bank or one of its financial subsidiaries, Washington Mutual will donate $1 to the One-to-One Tutoring Program. The funds will establish, maintain and promote the hot line as well as underwrite grants to model tutoring organizations in the Northwest.
"I think that we will donate upwards of $200,000 in 1992 alone to the One-to-One Program," said Kerry Killinger, Washington Mutual's chairman, president and chief executive officer.
Since the announcement of the One-to-One Program, Washington Mutual, in conjunction with local United Way agencies, has solicited information regarding tutoring from volunteer organizations and school districts.
"There is a tremendous need for tutors to help our teachers," said Killinger. "Tutors can assist in the most effective way: one to one. The tutoring hot line will be an effective way to match resources and needs. We're inviting every person with the desire to help to join with us."
In addition to setting up the hot line, Washington Mutual has recently made grants to educational organizations and is donating a building valued at $100,000 to the Bellevue, Wash., School District.
"Washington Mutual's One-to-One Tutoring Program shows how public- private partnerships can tackle the tough problems in our region," said Joel Pritchard, Lieutenant Governor of Washington.
Pritchard continued, "I've been a volunteer tutor for several years and it's tremendously rewarding. Everyone benefits -- the tutors, the student and the entire region."
Gov. Booth Gardner has proclaimed today "Washington Tutoring Day" in recognition of the One-to-One Tutoring Program.
"We're proud to continue the commitment to education that we've had for decades," said Killinger. "We're excited by the Program and the response to it has been heartwarming."
With $7.1 billion in assets, Washington Mutual is the Northwest's premier consumer bank, operating 101 financial centers and 18 home loan centers in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
