WASHINGTON MUTUAL KEEPS HIGH-RISE.

Byline: Gregory J. Wilcox Daily News Staff Writer

In a sign that it will maintain a sizable presence in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Washington Mutual (or WaMu; NYSE: WM) is the United States' largest savings and loan association.
Inc. has taken down the for-sale sign from Great Western Financial Corp.'s high-rise headquarters and will use the building to help it digest the acquisition of H.F. Ahmanson & Co.

When Washington Mutual officials announced the $9.9 billion deal in March to purchase Ahmanson, they said they planned to transfer some Ahmanson workers to the former Great Western's sprawling Chatsworth complex. But the WaMu officials offered no specifics.

While the purchase is expected to close in the fall, WaMu and Ahmanson officials said nothing Monday about how many workers will be making the move.

But the size of the 10-story building - 240,000 square feet - makes it likely there will be a lot.

The building was put up for sale last fall but quietly taken off the market after the Ahmanson deal was made.

``We determined we would need the space in the tower, so we are keeping it,'' said WaMu spokesman Tim McGarry Tim McGarry (born 1964) is an actor and comedian from North Belfast in Northern Ireland.

He is a member of the comedy group Hole In The Wall Gang, and played "Da", a Sinn Féin spokesman, in the comedy series Give My Head Peace.
. ``At this time we have no specific numbers to announce but obviously there is going to be a sizeable increase'' in the WaMu payroll based in Chatsworth.

About 2,700 people now work at the former Great Western site where Washington Mutual conducts operations in loan service, telephone banking, data processing data processing or information processing, operations (e.g., handling, merging, sorting, and computing) performed upon data in accordance with strictly defined procedures, such as recording and summarizing the financial transactions of a  and a variety of support services support services Psychology Non-health care-related ancillary services–eg, transportation, financial aid, support groups, homemaker services, respite services, and other services .

Ahmanson employs about 3,000 workers at its Irwindale headquarters that will be closed when the deal is complete, officials said.

Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  has been rocked by a round of consolidations in the financial industry that resulted in shrinking payrolls. So an influx of workers into the Valley is a positive sign, local officials and economists said.

``It's more good news for the San Fernando Valley,'' said Jack Kyser, chief economist The Chief Economist is a single position job class having primary responsibility for the development, coordination, and production of economic and financial analysis.
