WARNER-LAMBERT LAUNCHES MAJOR SMOKING CESSATION INITIATIVE; WELLNESS
PROGRAM WILL ASSIST EMPLOYEES IN COPING WITH SMOKING RESTRICTIONS
MORRIS PLAINS, N.J., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The Warner-Lambert Company (NYSE: WLA) today announced the launch of a major smoking cessation initiative aimed at employees (known as colleagues) and their families nationwide.
The Nicotrol Colleague Program covers three office visits and a full 16-week course of therapy with the company's nicotine patch, Nicotrol(TM) (nicotine transdermal system), if patch therapy is prescribed, as well as a Smoke Stoppers(R) behavioral modification kit and optional enrollment in a Smoke Stoppers group course -- all for a nominal charge. Additionally, Warner-Lambert has established the Nicotrol Center, a dedicated on-site facility staffed by medical professionals using state-of-the-art equipment, which will be available five days a week to participants in the program.
"As a company that is committed to smoking cessation, helping our colleagues achieve nonsmoker status is a real priority," said Joseph E. Smith, executive vice president and president, Pharmaceutical Sector. "Many companies have instituted on-site smoking restrictions. At Warner-Lambert we realized that these must go hand-in-hand with positive support." Warner-Lambert, which went "smoke free" in June 1990, hopes that its innovative program will serve as a model for other corporations.
The cost for the Nicotrol Program to colleagues and their family members will be $50 each, and an additional $25 for enrollment in a Smoke Stoppers group course. Participants can either be treated by on site medical staff or by their personal physicians. Colleagues can make additional visits any time to the Nicotrol Center to take advantage of the facility's medical services and counseling, equipment and information.
"By placing the Nicotrol Center right in the workplace, participants in the program will have immediate access to the support and professional advice that is an important aspect of any smoking cessation program," said Barry Levin, M.D., director of corporate health services. The Center will also be the site for an ongoing clinical study examining the success rate of Nicotrol therapy combined with Smoke Stoppers behavioral modification.
Smoke Stoppers is a program of the National Center for Health Promotion based in Ann Arbor, Mich. Established in 1977, Smoke Stoppers has been used in approximately 350 medical centers, corporations and labor organizations, including Yale New Haven Medical Center, American Airlines and UAW-GM. The program is available in the United States, Canada, Japan and the Middle East.
Nicotrol, the first transdermal nicotine system specifically developed for use during waking hours, is removed at bedtime so there is no additional delivery of nicotine during sleep. The patch was launched by the Parke-Davis division of Warner-Lambert in August. It was co- developed by Kabi Pharmacia, a leader in smoking cessation therapy, and Cygnus Therapeutic Systems, a company devoted to transdermal delivery technology. Nicotrol is manufactured by Cygnus in the United States.
Parke-Davis is a division of Warner-Lambert, a global organization devoted to discovering, developing, manufacturing and marketing quality health care and consumer products. The research-based company employs approximately 34,000 people worldwide.
