 WANG UNVEILS POWERFUL VS 12000 AND SEVEN OTHER NEW VS PRODUCTS
 LOWELL, Mass., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Wang Laboratories Inc. (AMEX: WAN) today unveiled the first member of the VS 12000 family, a new class of midrange systems built with advanced technology that dramatically expands the processing capabilities of the VS. Wang's VS 12000 delivers up to 50 percent more central processor unit (CPU) power than Wang's previous top-of-the-line VS, and provides high performance with features for efficient operation and growth in a wide range of commercial applications.
 Wang also announced seven new or enhanced hardware and software products that expand the VS product line and protect customers' investments in VS systems. These are the first of 37 VS hardware and software products Wang plans to introduce by the end of the calendar year. Highlighting today's announcements are:
 -- VS operating system (VS/OS) release 7.40 that provides increased connectivity to support growing user populations; and a new software product that provides high-end VS systems with an opportunity for increased system capacity and expanded physical and logical connectivity;
 -- Two new additions to Wang's family of VS controllers that provide users with improved overall performance, capacity, and increased connectivity;
 -- A new fiber optic resource sharing facility that enables remote VS resources to be accessed as local devices;
 -- Two new low-cost tape drives for VS backup.
 "The VS is a key component of our OFFICE 2000 strategy. Today's announcements expand the processing power, connectivity, and price/performance of the VS product family," said Richard W. Miller, Wang's chairman and chief executive officer. "The VS is uniquely suited as a server for integrated data processing, imaging, and office solutions. The new VS 12000, with its substantial processing power, is a platform of choice for today's largest and most demanding OFFICE 2000 applications."
 The VS 12000 follows by nine months the announcement of the VS 6000/Server, Wang's newest entry-level VS series. "As evidenced by our recent announcements, and those slated for later this year, VS hardware and software enhancement is a major priority for Wang," said Miller. "Over the past two years, the VS has evolved from a traditional minicomputer platform to an applications server for industry-standard clients and local area networks. Wang continues to strengthen the VS product line and help users bridge the gap between the computing worlds of the '80s and the '90s."
 The VS family now consists of the VS 6000/Server, the midrange VS 8000, and the high-end VS 10000 and VS 12000. VS 12000 Architectural Highlights
 The VS 12000 is based on a Wang-designed, state-of-the-art BiPolar complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (BiCMOS) chip set. Manufactured by Hitachi, the low-power BiCMOS chip set means fewer chips in the design and higher reliability.
 The first offering in the VS 12000 family is the Model 550. The new system is available as either a complete system or as an upgrade to an installed VS 10000. Since compatibility with the VS 10000 is maintained, users' investment in VS software, controllers, and peripheral devices is protected.
 "The flexibility of the VS architecture has allowed Wang to accommodate a host of advanced technologies and at the same time protect our customers' investments in their VS systems," said Don Casey, Wang's executive vice president and chief development officer.
 The VS 12000 features 256 kilobytes of write-back cache memory incorporated into the central processor and a five-stage pipeline that improves the processor speed and reduces cycle time.
 The VS 12000 model 550 is available immediately. Pricing for the Model 550 with 64 megabytes of memory is $780,000. The VS/OS license is $130,000. Upgrades for VS 10000 models range from $429,350 to $601,450 and include the VS/OS upgrade. New VS Operating System Release
 Wang also introduced VS/OS 7.40, a new release of the VS operating system that allows users to access up to 998 concurrent workstation windows when used in conjunction with Wang's Extended Configuration Support (XCS) package. For systems bound by physical connectivity or virtual memory, XCS increases the number of terminals, printers, and PCs that can be connected to a single controller, as well as increasing the virtual memory available to the operating system to allow for more users and larger programs. It also allows transparent access to data between VS processors when used with the new VS Fiber Optic Resource Sharing Facility hardware. XCS will function on all VS 7000, VS 8000, vs 10000, and VS 12000 series processors. VS/OS Release 7.40 is available immediately. XCS will be available in the second quarter of calendar year 1992. XCS is priced from $11,000 to $31,600, depending on the VS CPU model.
 "Wang has been enhancing the VS/OS for well over a decade," said Casey. "VS/OS 7.40 is part of Wang's ongoing plan to add enhancements that increase the value of the VS in mission-critical environments." Fiber Optic Resource Sharing Facility
 Wang introduced the VS Fiber Optic Resource Sharing Facility (FO-RSF), a combination of hardware and software products that connect up to four VS processors. The FO-RSF allows remote VS resources, such as disk drives, to be accessed as local devices. It provides users with high-speed fiber optic connectivity and allows a distance of up to 1.25 miles between linked VS systems. FO-RSF allows users to share system resources, increase connectivity, and distribute CPU work loads.
 Priced at $16,000, the FO-RSF will be available in the second quarter of calendar year 1992. New VS Controllers
 Wang announced a new SCSI Input/Output Controller (IOC) for VS 5000 and VS 6000 systems that features four megabytes of on-board cache memory. The SCSI IOC offers double the disk throughput of existing SCSI controllers and supports asynchronous and synchronous data transfer for SCSI mass storage and retrieval devices. Available immediately, the SCSI IOC is priced at $11,000.
 Wang also introduced the 70V67 Enhanced Serial Controller for high-end VS systems. The new controller provides users with significantly higher capacity and connectivity to peripheral devices that protect users' investments in VS cabinets. It supports up to 64 physical and 128 logical devices. The addition of an optional microcode support package allows support for up to 128 physical and 256 logical devices.
 Available in the second quarter of calendar year 1992, the 70V67 Enhanced Serial Controller is priced at $11,250. New Tape Devices for VS Backup
 Wang introduced two new tape drives that provide VS users with a high-performance backup solution. The tape drives include a low-cost 4mm drive based on Digital Audio Tape (DAT) technology and a high-capacity 8mm drive based on video recording technology (similar to that used in camcorders). Both tape drives support the SCSI standard via a single-ended SCSI interface and can be attached to all VS SCSI controllers in a variety of cabinets.
 The 4mm and 8mm tape drives utilize compact tape cassettes with significant storage capacity of up to 1.3 gigabytes (GB) and 5.3GB, respectively, on standard-length media.
 Available immediately, the 4mm tape drive is priced at $4,995 and the 8mm tape drive at $9,000.
