WANG NETWORKING PRODUCTS ENHANCE VS CONNECTIVITY
LOWELL, Mass., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- In keeping with its stated

commitment to observe industry and open standards in new product development, Wang Laboratories, Inc., (AMEX: WAN) today announced nine new or enhanced VS products that follow industry or open systems communications standards, enabling users to better connect their VS systems to multivendor enterprise networks. Customers can leverage their VS investment with these products, which are all available now, to gain improved connectivity, enhanced response times, lower communication costs, or faster distribution of information to systems.
"These products are nine of the 37 new and enhanced VS products that Wang promised to our users this year," said Donald Casey, Wang's chief development officer. "We are on schedule with our VS product plan. The VS is a key component of our OFFICE 2000 strategy of helping our customers improve their productivity, quality, and service. Many want to integrate their VS systems in industry standard and open environments. These products give our customers the connectivity they need between Wang and other vendors' systems. We are committed to meeting our customer's needs and protecting their VS investment."
Wang users appreciate the flexibility of the VS system in multivendor communication environments. "If open system means being able to communicate with everybody and being able to run all kinds of software, then I think Wang is as open as you can get," said Chuck Thor, director of systems and computer operations for CMS, USI, a division of CMS Energy in Jackson, Michigan.
"The VS communicates with everything in virtually every protocol you can think of, from the 300 baud async up to V.32 up to SNA," continued Chuck. "Other systems, even UNIX-based platforms, don't touch the VS for communications." OSI Products
The new VS File Transfer, Access, and Management (FTAM) Release 1.0 enables VS users to transfer and manage files between heterogeneous systems in an Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) environment. Prices range from $3,000 to $19,500.
Wang's VS OSI Services (WOSIS) CORE Release 2.10 significantly reduces system resources necessary for OSI communications and enables users to customize their WOSIS installations to the requirements of their applications communicating in an open systems environment. Prices range from $2,000 to $26,000 SNA Products
VS Access/APPC LEN (Application Program-to-Program Communication Low Entry Networking) is a new product that meets IBM's PU2.1 peer-to-peer communication standard, giving VS users additional networking flexibility. Their VS applications can communicate with LU6.2-compliant applications operating in a PU2.1 environment on other platforms, eliminating the need for host system routing. Customers can share data and processing power on a network-wide basis. Prices range from $1,500 to $19,500 for VS Access/APPC LEN Services. The application programming interface (API) tools are priced at $12,000.
Wang's new VS SNA Channel Attach Standard Components Release 2.70.50 works with the VS and special IBM Channel Attach hardware, allowing the VS to connect directly to an IBM host system bus via an industry- standard IEEE 802.3 local area network. This connection eliminates the need for IBM mainframe front-end processor ports, enabling customers to increase throughput, simplify connectivity, and control costs. Prices range from $400 to $5,200. OSN/WSN Products
Wang has unbundled its VS Wang Systems Networking (WSN) NETCORE product into two communication software packages to reduce the cost of this software for customers using open networking options. VS Open Systems Networking (OSN) NETCORE Release 9.0 now provides the network installation, logging, and configuration services common to most Wang industry-standard and open communications products. Prices range from $200 to $2,600.
The now separate, VS WSN CNS (Communications Network Services) Release 9.0 contains the network protocol software that supports industry-standard Wang WSN networking applications. Prices range from $400 to $5,200.
The newest release of VS OSN X.25 Data Link Service software provides for improved communications interoperability and performance (dynamic packet size negotiation and sliding transmission window) between a VS system and other Wang or non-Wang systems over a CCITT- compliant (Consultative Committee for International Telephone and Telegraph) X.25 Packet Switched Data Network (PSDN). The product is priced at $1,500.
VS Terminal Emulation (VSTE) Release 7.18 provides new nested remote logon services for VS systems on WSN networks, where users can run VSTE to log on to a remote VS, and then run VSTE again to log on to a third VS. VSTE Release 7.18 now includes the in-bound remote logon server formerly packaged with WSN NETCORE. Prices range from $440 to $5,720.
VS WSN Resource Sharing Facility (RSF) Data Link Release 1.0 is a new WSN product that allows Wang CNS-based applications such as Wang OFFICE, File Transfer Manager (FTM), and VS Terminal Emulation to run over an RSF fiber optic data link, connecting VS clustered systems. The product is priced at $1,500.
