WANG CLARIFIES SPECULATION REGARDING MANUFACTURING OPERATIONS IN IRELAND
LOWELL, Mass., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to speculation regarding the status of Wang's manufacturing operations in Ireland, Wang Laboratories today stated that it plans to maintain its manufacturing operations in that country.
As part of the worldwide restructuring program which management expects will return Wang to profitability and enable it to successfully emerge from Chapter 11, the company is reducing its manufacturing operations worldwide. The Irish facility is a strategic manufacturing operation for products Wang offers to customers in Europe. While the facility in Limerick will be scaled back, the reductions there will be relatively less than the cutbacks at other Wang manufacturing facilities throughout the world.
The workforce reductions in Ireland will total approximately 50 percent of the current workforce of 300, which is significantly less then Wang's worldwide manufacturing reductions of approximately 70 percent. Current plans call for the Limerick facility to continue to employ 150 permanent people, while some facilities in other countries will be closed. It is expected that the hiring of temporary help will continue in its normal pattern.
In addition, a number of manufacturing operations currently performed at Limerick will be outsourced to third-party providers in Ireland.
Michael P. Downes, senior vice president, manufacturing, said, "Our continued commitment to our Irish manufacturing operations and the relatively lesser reductions in our Irish workforce indicates the strategic importance which we attach to the facility and to our European markets."
