WANG ANNOUNCES CALS SOFTWARE PRODUCT
WANG ANNOUNCES CALS SOFTWARE PRODUCT LOWELL, Mass., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Wang Laboratories Inc.
(AMEX: WAN) today announced UNIX applications software designed to help automate the information flow among the U.S. Department of Defense and its weapon systems contractors. Called KEYOPS (which stands for Key Operations), the software will assist organizations in replacing the management of paper documentation with the interchange of government standard computer data.
Using a Wang developed CALS-compliant architecture, KEYOPS combines an array of leading third-party text and graphics applications that conform to worldwide standards and integrates them under an X-Window graphical user interface. It is portable across popular UNIX platforms and window managers. KEYOPS enables government and commercial customers to create, convert and manage computer information to comply with the U.S. Department of Defense's (DoD) Computer-aided Acquisition and Logistics Support (CALS) initiative. It is also part of Wang's concurrent engineering solution portfolio to help manage technical and administrative information in manufacturing environments. KEYOPS demonstrates Wang's commitment, under its OFFICE 2000 strategy, to develop products that operate in multivendor computer environments, and help customers enhance existing resources rather than requiring their replacement. The CALS initiative is a DoD strategy to procure, produce and support weapon systems without paper documents, such as technical and training manuals, and engineering drawings. Its objectives are to lower overall weapon systems costs, to facilitate concurrent engineering and just-in-time manufacturing of needed components, and to create mission critical information once and allow multiple organizations to use it many times. KEYOPS provides customers an intelligent gateway between proprietary and open systems computing environments so data can be easily shared among multivendor systems and applications. It enables organizations to convert many types of proprietary word processing text formats and engineering drawing, graphics and illustration formats to CALS-compliant data formats. The software also allows users to create, access and share text and graphics information in CALS-compliant formats. Maintaining information in consistent neutral data formats will facilitate easy access and exchange technical information, and streamline workflow procedures. Platforms and Pricing Designed to support a variety of UNIX platforms, KEYTOPS is now available for Wang RISC Series systems running IBM Inc.'s AIXwindows environment, i486 PC systems running The Santa Cruz Operation Inc.'s SCO (UNIX) Open Desktop and Sun Microsystems Inc.'s SPARCstations running SUN/os. The easy-to-use, icon-driven KEYOPS graphical user interface is consistent among all platforms which helps minimize customer training requirements. KEYOPS is priced at $20,000. Wang will sell, service and support KEYOPS under the Wang label. KEYOPS is able to connect to and move documents from Wang OIS, Alliance and VS systems, Digital Equipment Corp.'s VAX/VMS systems, industry-standard personal computers (PCs) and most other UNIX systems. The primary markets for KEYOPS are U.S. government agencies, manufacturing and aerospace companies, small businesses involved in DoD procurements and systems integrators. Standards Supported KEYOPS is an ideal platform for CALS because it is the only commercially available software product fully compliant with the U.S. government standard MIL-STD-1840A, which supports the movement of logistics information among organizations and systems through a standard digital interface. It also complies with GOSIP, POSIX and APP. The software complies with CALS data formats, such as Initial Graphics Exchange Specification (IGES) as defined in MIL-D-28000, Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) in compliance in MIL-M-280001/FIPS 152, CCITT Group 4 for raster graphics information as defined in MIL-R-280002 and Computer Graphic Metafile (CGM) in compliance with MIL-D-28003. KEYOPS also complies with the Air Transport Association's ATA-100 specification for commercial aircraft technical data, the European Community's AECMA 2000 and the U.S. Department of Commerce's initiative for Electronic Commerce (using EDI).
