WAMSO Young Artist Competition winners announced.


Conor Nelson, a 24-year old flutist from Toronto, Ontario, was awarded first prize and grand prize at the 51st annual WAMSO Young Artist Competition. Siwoo Kim, 17-year-old violinist and a native of South Korea, was the recipient of a $5,000 scholarship to the Aspen Music School in Boulder, Colorado. Kim is a junior at Westerville South High School in Westerville, Ohio. He studies with Roland and Almita Vamos Roland and Almita Vamos are a husband and wife teaching team who are the leading violin/viola instructors in the United States. Many of their pupils have become laureates of in the most prestigious international competitions. . Kim was awarded the Elaine Louise Lagerstrom Memorial Violin Award that carries a prize of $1,000 and was also awarded a performance opportunity with The Schubert Club of St. Paul.

The Young Artist Competition is a collaborative effort between WAMSO-Minnesota Orchestra Volunteer Association and the Minnesota Orchestra. Musicians under age 26 compete for more than $15,000 in cash prizes, scholarships, performance opportunities and summer program scholarships. The six finalists were drawn from an original field of 68 applicants who submitted audition CDs for the preliminary round. Sixteen contestants advanced to the semifinals held at Macalester College.

Started in 1956, the competition draws talented young musicians to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area from all over the world. WAMSO-Minnesota Orchestra Volunteer Association is in its 56th year of providing support for the Minnesota Orchestra and promoting music education throughout Minnesota.
