WALKERS CONQUER RAIN TO FIGHT BREAST CANCER.

More than 3,000 walkers slogged though the rain along the Malibu coast Sunday as they finished a three-day, 60-mile walk to call attention to breast cancer and raise $6.6 million to help find a cure.

In the third annual Avon Breast Cancer Three-Day walk, participants, including 300 breast cancer survivors Cancer survivors are those individuals with cancer of any type, current or past, who are still living.  disease, she added, ``a little rain is like a day at the beach.''

That spirit was echoed among the 3,100 walkers, some of them unprepared for a rainy finish line.

``I have two ponchos, two trash bags and two Mylar blankets underneath, and we're soaked,'' said Denise Kurtz, 57, of Sherman Oaks as she walked into Malibu's western limits with breast cancer survivor of five years Pat Haynes of Redondo Beach Redondo Beach (rĭdŏn`dō), city (1990 pop. 60,167), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1892. They were rained upon all of Friday, she said, but enjoyed nice weather Saturday and weren't expecting to get wet Sunday.

``Nobody has their rain gear on, because we were told that it was going to rain tonight,'' she said.

The money will be granted to leading research programs - including the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California's Irvine Medical Center - looking into possible causes, prevention, treatment and cures for breast cancer. Grants will also cover clinical care of medically underserved and minority women.
