Valencia-based Team Walker Motor Sports will field a two-driver team to run in the NASCAR NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing), organization that sanctions American stock-car races, est. 1948. It held its first race in Daytona Beach, Fla.  Winston West, Featherlite Southwest and a Super Late Model series for 2002.

Saugus High graduate Sean Woodside, the 1999 Winston West champion and 2001 Winston West Bud Pole Award winner, will drive the No. 45 Team Walker Motor Sports entry on the Winston West and selected Southwest Series races.

``I'm really looking forward to getting into a Southwest Series car again,'' said Woodside, who had one win and four top-five finishes in the 2000 season driving on the series. ``... The schedule is great and the competition is intense.''

Woodside finished sixth in points on the Winston West Series last year with five top-fives. He also won the most poles.

``As good a time as I've had in the Winston West Series over the past five years,'' Woodside said, ``I'm looking forward to the variety of running in both series.''

Mike Walker, son of team owner Donna Walker and co-owner of the team, will race the entire Mesa Marin Raceway Mesa Marin Raceway was a high banked half mile racetrack in Bakersfield, California that was demolished following the 2005 racing season to make way for housing developments in the foothills of northeast Bakersfield.  Super Late Model schedule in Bakersfield as well as selected Winston West and Southwest Series races.

``I'm planning to use the touring-division races as learning experiences,'' Mike Walker said. ``I'm going to take this season race by race, make an honest effort at each event, learn what I can, and use that information to make decisions about the next move.''

Mike Walker and Woodside are entered in today's Winston West Series race at Phoenix International Raceway Phoenix International Raceway, or just PIR, is a one mile tri-oval race track located in Avondale, Arizona. It opened in 1964, as the new home of major open-wheel racing in the Phoenix area, replacing the track at the Arizona State Fairgrounds as an automobile racing venue. . Woodside also will race in the Southwest Series event at Phoenix.

``We have taken a lot of time over the last couple of months to consider our options,'' Donna Walker said. ``After much discussion and many team meetings, we decided it is in our best interest to diversify this year and gain some solid experience in the Southwest Series cars. It is such a competitive series and has launched the careers of so many drivers now competing at the national level, that we feel this direction is worthwhile.''

--Winston West notes: Woodside won't be the only driver pulling double duty this weekend at Phoenix. NASCAR Winston Cup star Ken Schrader Kenneth Schrader (born May 29, 1955 in Fenton, Missouri) is a second-generation race car driver. He currently drives the #21 Little Debbie Snacks Ford Fusion for Wood Brothers in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series.  also is expected to race in both the Winston West and Southwest Series events.

The others are Jeff Jefferson and John Baker.

Schrader won last year's Winston West race at Phoenix in a record-setting 1 hour, 36 minutes, 38 seconds around the 1-mile paved oval.

Other former Winston Cup stars who have won Winston West races at Phoenix include Richard Petty Richard Lee Petty (born July 2, 1937) is a former NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver. "The King," as he is nicknamed, is most well-known for winning the NASCAR Championship seven times (Dale Earnhardt is the only other driver to accomplish this feat),winning a record 200 races  and Neil Bonnett Neil Bonnett (July 30, 1946 - February 11, 1994) was a NASCAR driver who compiled 18 victories and 20 poles over his 18-year career. The Hueytown, Alabama native currently ranks 35th in all time NASCAR Cup wins. .

 of Bakersfield, a rookie last year, won the pole at Phoenix.

Brendan Gaughan Brendan Gaughan (born July 10, 1975 in Los Angeles, California) is a truck racer from Las Vegas, Nevada. Gaughan is the grandson of Vegas gaming pioneer Jackie Gaughan and son of Michael Gaughan, a hotel and casino magnate. , who won the Winston West championship in 2000 and 2001, has moved on to the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Austin Cameron, driver of the family-owned AC Motorsports team for the past four years, will take over as driver of Gaughan's NAPA Auto Parts/Martin Senour Chevrolet.

--Winston West schedule announced: The NASCAR Winston West Series released its eight-race schedule for the 2002 season.

The Winston West Series comes to Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  twice - once at California Speedway The California Speedway is a two-mile, low-banked, D-shaped oval superspeedway in Fontana, California, similar to that of "sister track" Michigan International Speedway. It is located approximately 40 miles east of Los Angeles on the site of the former Kaiser Steel mill.  in Fontana in April and once at Irwindale Speedway Irwindale Speedway is a motorsports facility located in Irwindale, California. It features banked, paved 1/2 and 1/3 mile oval tracks. It is mainly used for USAC sprint car and regional NASCAR races.  in July.

The series made three stops at Irwindale last year but has been cut from 12 races last year to eight.

The Winston West season starts today at Phoenix and ends Oct. 12 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Las Vegas Motor Speedway, located in Clark County, Nevada, just outside Las Vegas, is a 1,200 acre (4.9 km²) complex of four different tracks for automobile racing. The complex is owned by Speedway Motorsports, Inc., which is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. .

--American Le Mans Series update: Panoz Motor Sports has hired Mehdi Ahmadi as race engineer for Bryan Herta's entry in the American Le Mans Series The American Le Mans Series (ALMS) is a sports car racing series based in the United States and Canada. It consists of a series of endurance and sprint races, and was created in the spirit of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. .

Herta, a Valencia resident and Hart High graduate, will team with Terry Borcheller in the Panoz No. 51 car.

Ahmadi was recruited from Honda Performance Development, where he worked on an extensive Champ car wind-tunnel program.

Last year: Rookie Mark Reed of Bakersfield won the pole, but it was Eric Norris who took the early lead in the race. Norris led the first 61 laps before NASCAR Winston Cup star Ken Schrader took over. Scott Lynch grabbed the lead from Schrader on lap 119 but gave it back on lap 125. Schrader held on for the rest of the race.
