WALESA GRATEFUL TO REAGAN : POLISH REFORMER HAILS FORMER PRESIDENT'S LEGACY AT LIBRARY CONFERENCE.Byline: Alicia Doyle Daily News Staff Writer Former Polish President Lech Walesa Noun 1. Lech Walesa - Polish labor leader and statesman (born in 1943) Walesa brought an enthusiastic audience to its feet Monday at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Center for Public Affairs as he praised the former U.S. president's role in bringing democracy to Poland. ``We Poles owe him freedom,'' Walesa said through an interpreter. ``Freedom is just like good health - when in good health, you take it for granted, and you appreciate good health only when it's gone.'' The sold-out public conference - ``The Reagan Legacy'' - was intended to shed light on Reagan's impact domestically and abroad, tracing his political career from Hollywood to Sacramento to Washington, D.C. In the first appearance of his three-week U.S. visit, Walesa explained how Reagan's policies facilitated the fall of communism in Poland as well as other portions of Europe and the Soviet Union. ``His policies provided us with a very strong backing,'' Walesa said, stressing Reagan's convictions of democracy, freedom of speech and human rights. ``He thought problems were there to be challenged, and he challenged them.'' Walesa led the Polish trade union Solidarity during the 1980s, and served as president of Poland from 1990 to 1995.
