WALES: Gardening industry honour for lecturer.

Byline: By CARL BUTLER

LECTURER Susan Nicholas, who works at the Welsh College of Horticulture in Northop near Mold, has been awarded the Institute of Horticulture's President's Medal for her work with the Young Horticulturist of the Year Competition.

Tony Girard, IoH President, said: "The competition has gone from strength to strength since Sue took over the reins. We've seen a steady increase in the number of contestants and organisations that take part over recent years.

"This in turn has attracted a big increase in sponsorship."

Sue has been a horticulture lecturer at the college for 12 years. She has organised the Young Horticulturist of the Year Competition since 2001.

She has long-term experience in supporting and enthusing young people; her involvement includes chairing Birkenhead YMCA, and recently managing a pounds 6m development to help rehabilitate young people addicted to drugs and alcohol.
