 WAL-MART STORES REPORTS DECEMBER SALES
 BENTONVILLE, Ark., Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.


(NYSE: WMT; PSE) today reported net sales for the month of December of $5,862,000,000, an increase of 26 percent from sales of $4,644,000,000 in the same period a year earlier.
 For the 11 months ending Dec. 31, sales increased 35 percent to $40,579,000,000 from $30,107,000,000 for the same period a year ago.
 Wal-Mart's net sales include the December results of the McLane subsidiary of $371,000,000, and year-to-date sales of $2,292,000,000, as compared to December and year-to-date sales of $174,000,000 a year earlier. Excluding these sales, net sales would be $5,491,000,000, an increase of 23 percent for the month and $38,287,000,000, an increase of 28 percent for the year.
 Same store sales increased 5 percent for the month of December and 10 percent for the 11 months ended Dec. 31.
 Sam's Clubs had sales of $1,175,000,000, up 34 percent for the month, and $8,669,000,000, up 43 percent for the 11 months ended Dec. 31. Same club sales increased 3 percent for the month and 14 percent for the 11 months.
 The company had 1,699 Wal-Mart stores (includes six Supercenter stores), 204 Sam's Clubs and four Hypermart*USA units in operation at Dec. 31, compared with 1,537 Wal-Mart stores (includes five Supercenter stores), 147 Sam's Clubs and four Hypermart*USA units a year ago.
 Wal-Mart operates in a 41-state trade area, and its securities are listed on the New York and Pacific stock exchanges.
