WAITING ROOM GETS HOLLYWOOD TREATMENT PASADENA TEAM DESIGN FOR THE EMMYS.

Byline: Michelle J. Mills Staff Writer

For Sunday's Prime-time Emmy Awards, TV stars will be waiting and resting off stage in a green room elegantly appointed by Pasadena designers Matthew White Matthew (or Matt) White is the name of several people:
  • Matthew White (journalist), an Australian sports presenter
  • Matthew J. White, a left-handed baseball pitcher and rock entrepreneur
  • Matthew Edward White, a right-handed baseball pitcher
 and Frank Webb.

White and Webb was named one of the best 100 architect and design firms in the world, according to according to

Architectural Digest Architectural Digest is a glossy American monthly magazine. Its principle subject is interior design, not -- as the name of the magazine might suggest -- architecture more generally. The magazine is published by Condé Nast Publications and was founded in 1920 [1]. . The magazine chose White and Webb to design the Emmys green room.

The portable room will be parked in the Shrine Auditorium The Shrine Auditorium is a landmark large-event venue in Los Angeles, California, USA. It is also the headquarters of the Al Malaikah Temple, a division of the Shriners. .

``There is not even a room,'' White said. ``It is built off-site by Hollywood set builders and brought in with wood floors and columns and everything that we put in.

``It's an incredible thing. It is built from the ground up especially for this evening.''

White incorporated the Shrine's mix of Moorish-style domes, arches and fretwork into the design. They call it ``Hollywood Casbah.''

``We didn't want it to look like an airport waiting room,'' White said.

The space is approximately 530 square feet and has room for as many as 25 people at a time. There will be large-

screen TVs set up so the celebrities can watch what is happening on stage.

The main room is done in shades of Noun 1. shades of - something that reminds you of someone or something; "aren't there shades of 1948 here?"

gray, including dove and pewter, as well as lots of silver and an accent of bold coral.

White and Webb designed the gray wallpaper with a strong white pattern.

``We've taken designs from Moroccan tile and blown them up and made them almost modern,'' White said. ``That's sort of what we're about, I'm the more classicist clas·si·cist

The center of the room has a coral ottoman with a spire and pouf, a Gatsby sofa from Kreiss, small chairs, banquettes and slipper chairs.

One striking piece is by Odegard, a carved teak teak, tall deciduous tree (Tectona grandis) of the family Verbenaceae (verbena family), native to India and Malaysia but now widely cultivated in other tropical areas.  chair covered with hammered sheets of silver.

``It's an Indian technique,'' White said. ``It's the kind of thing that you would see in a maharajah's palace.

``A lot of the ladies who will be sitting there are all dressed up and won't want to sit in some big, deep, soft sofa. They need to perch carefully so their dresses don't get all wrinkled. We were very careful in our fabric selection. We didn't want anything linty,'' White said.

The fabrics, from Donghia Inc. and Bergamo Fabric, provide a combination of textures.

``We tried to make it not too rich-looking, not too fussy fuss·y

2. Making or marked by an extravagant outward show; ostentatious. See Synonyms at showy.
. It's very laid-back, very California.''

Off the main room is a small alcove in peach hues with peach wallpaper and four chairs. This offers an intimate spot for conversation or a quiet getaway to prepare before going on stage, White said.

The floor is wood painted off-white. It is covered with a jute carpet from Mansour that allows the wood to be seen around the edge like a border. When selecting the floor covering, Webb and White took into consideration that many women would be in high heels high heels high npltalons hauts, hauts talons

; the sisal-like carpet will be easy for them to walk on, and it softens the room.

Sconces and hanging fixtures provide indirect lighting. There is a floor-to-ceiling mirror that will help reflect the light. A console in front of the mirror will be used for food and drinks.

Sunday night Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists. , White and Webb will be in the Emmy audience.

``Designers don't get awards like the Emmys, so we feel that by being asked to do this by Architectural Digest, it's a real feather in our caps,'' White said. ``This is an incredible honor.''

TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS

Matthew White and Frank Webb offer a few tips to transform a small room into a relaxing refuge.

Use mirrors to expand the space.

Don't be afraid of scale, such as large patterns or large furniture. But don't fill the room. Choose one pattern or one piece of big furniture.

Go for drama. Strong, rich or bright colors can make a room more inviting. Dark colors can make a space feel like a cocoon cocoon: see pupa. .
