WACKENHUT ASSUMES SECURITY ROLE FOR STATE OF FLORIDA

 CORAL GABLES, Fla., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The Wackenhut Corporation (NYSE: WAK) has been contracted by the state of Florida to provide armed security officers at all Interstate highway rest areas and welcome centers in the state for the next nine months, at a maximum cost of $6.7 million.
 Richard R. Wackenhut, president and chief operating officer of The Wackenhut Corporation, the nation's third largest provider of security- related services, said, "We are a Florida-based Corporation and will be supporting the state by placing highly trained Custom Protection Officers on duty to enhance the safety of the traveling public at each location."
 The first shift of officers went on duty at 8 a.m., Sept. 20, just three days after the signing of the contract with the Department of Transportation. The security officers will be on duty at 59 separate locations, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
 The Wackenhut Corporation was founded in Florida in 1954 and has offices in 14 cities throughout the state. In the past 39 years it has grown to become a worldwide security organization with operations in over 125 U.S. locations and in 50 other countries on six continents.
 It was founded by George R. Wackenhut, a former Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, who remains today as the chairman of the board and chief executive officer. It is a publicly owned company and its shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
