 W.J. TIMKEN ELECTED VICE PRESIDENT AND OFFICER
 CANTON, Ohio, April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Ward J. Timken was elected


a vice president and officer of The Timken Company (NYSE: TKR) at the company's board of directors meeting today.
 Mr. Timken, a member of the company's board of directors since 1971 and a member of its executive committee, had been director - human resource development since 1985. In his new position as vice president, he will report to W.R. Timken, Jr., chairman - board of directors. Mr. Timken will join the company's operating management committee.
 Mr. Timken will divide his time equally between Timken Company affairs and his external responsibility as president of the Timken Foundation, an independent charitable foundation unaffiliated with The Timken Company.
 As a member of the company's operating management committee, Mr. Timken will increase his participation in corporate policy making. His company duties will continue to include responsibility for corporate community and charitable activities. He also will continue to administer the company's educational and scholarship programs.
 A native of Canton, Mr. Timken earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Arizona in 1966. He completed a management development program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration in 1977 and received a master's degree in management science in 1985 from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
 In 1968, Mr. Timken joined The Timken Company as a project man in thesteel operations division, was named assistant to the vice president - steel operations and later, manager - administration - steel operations. In 1977, he was named director - corporate development with responsibilities for coordination of the corporate capital spending cycle and development of strategies for resource deployment worldwide.
 He was named director - human resource development in 1985. His duties have included developing and coordinating a formalized program to assist division heads in planning for future management needs as well as evaluating and overseeing the career development of the companyUs current and future managers. He also has assisted senior management in the administration of management compensation programs.
 Mr. Timken also serves as president of The Timken Company Charitable Trust and The Timken Company Educational Fund, Inc. Mr. Timken is president of the Timken Foundation, a private foundation that makes gifts to civic, educational and charitable organizations, both domestic and international. He is a trustee of the Education Enhancement Partnership and is vice president of the Henry & Louise Timken Foundation. He is a member of the Greater Canton Chamber of Commerce and The Human Resource Planning Committee. Mr. Timken is a member of the board of trustees of Leadership Canton and an active member of the United Way of Central Stark County.
