In June 2007, a restored Avro Vulcan Mark 2, XH558, took to the air to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Falklands conflict. This memoir, by one of the plane's original test pilots, describes in laymen's terms what it was like to tame the first prototypes of the aircraft and to master the unusual characteristics of the Vulcan's shape. Although the author puts the developments, demonstrations, and accidents in their political and historical perspective, his story is a highly personal one. Color and b&w photos are included, many never before published. A glossary, chronology, and appendices of original documents are also included. Blackman is a member of the American Society of Experimental Test Pilots, the Royal Institute of Navigation, and the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators.
