Volunteers help fill bare shelves.

Byline: Ben Fuchs The Register-Guard

Piled high on heavy-duty industrial shelves, the monstrous stacks of food reach high into the cool air, coming close to touching the warehouse's sloped ceiling in spots. Boxes of cereal, cans of soup and barrels of colorful fall squash are seemingly everywhere.

"You can see straight through," said events coordinator Terry Kirby Terry Gayle Kirby (born January 20, 1970 in Hampton, Virginia), is a former professional American football player who played ten seasons in the NFL from 1993 to 2002. "When this place is full, you can't see the back wall."

Kirby hopes that will change, and soon. The nonprofit agency received a much-needed boost Sunday morning Sunday Morning may refer to:

when about 15 volunteers worked quickly to unload nearly 8,300 pounds of nonperishable items from a bus as part of FOOD for Lane County's "Stuff the Bus" food drive.

The campaign, which began Friday and ended with Sunday morning's furious unloading spree at the organization's headquarters on Bailey Hill Road, will provide more than 4,000 meals to low-income and homeless people. Kirby said the results of this year's drive, which topped last year's total by about 1,500 pounds, are encouraging.

Lizzie Wolfram wolfram: see tungsten. , who volunteered with her family and members of her Girl Scouts troop, said the satisfaction of helping the less fortunate justified the early wake-up call.

"I know it sounds kind of stupid, but it's fun," said the 13-year-old, who's now volunteered with Stuff the Bus for three straight years. "You feel like you're helping the community."

Caroline Wolfram, Lizzie's mother, said she started bringing Lizzie and her 9-year-old sister, Helen, to FOOD for Lane County after being snubbed by several other local organizations, some of whom preferred older volunteers.

The Wolframs and other volunteers will help keep food flowing from donors to the warehouse to local charity agencies and soup kitchens, where demand for food peaks around the holidays. Donations also tend to increase this time of year, FOOD for Lane County interim director Jessica Chanay said.

"I think it's that time when people think a little more about hunger," she said. "People just seem a little more predisposed pre·dis·pose

HOW TO HELP

FOOD for Lane County: All perishable foods should be donated directly to the agency's warehouse at 770 Bailey Hill Road in southwest Eugene. Fresh or frozen meats, such as turkey, ham, roast beef and chicken, are especially important this time of year, as are high-protein foods of any kind.

U.S. Postal Service The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) processes and delivers mail to individuals and businesses within the United States. The service seeks to improve its performance through the development of efficient mail-handling systems and operates its own planning and engineering programs.  Drive: Mail carriers will pick up bags of food left near mailboxes at homes and businesses on the Saturdays of Dec. 6 and 13. Additional collection dates are planned for January.
