The largest city in the U.S. Department of Design and Construction to design the reconstruction of Columbus Circle Columbus Circle, named for Christopher Columbus, is a major landmark and point of attraction in the New York City borough of Manhattan. Completed in 1905 and renovated a century later, it is located at the intersection of Broadway, Central Park West, Central Park South (59th , adjacent to Central Park South in Manhattan. The project entails an interdisciplinary design involving Vollmer's team of engineers, landscape architects, architects and urban designers. Design improvements and enhancements will include lighting, landscaping, sidewalks, streets, traffic signals, signing, utilities and street amenities. Vollmer Associates' responsibilities will include design development, contract documents and construction support. The project will also involve public participation and coordination with many governmental agencies. Construction is expected to start in the spring of 2001.
