SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 30, 2002

Santa Clara, Calif.-based Netergy Microelectronics, Inc.(TM) (www.netergymicro.com), a subsidiary of 8x8, Inc. (Nasdaq:EGHT), announced today the general availability of its newest audio compression engine, the Audacity(TM)-VP7. The VP7 is ideal for such applications as voice over IP, DSL DSL

Additional applications include digital loop carriers, echo cancellation cards, DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive  resource cards and trunking gateways. Dr. Philip Bednarz, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Netergy Microelectronics, Inc., said, "The Audacity-VP7 is a good example of Netergy's expertise in creating innovative architectures for the emerging Voice-over-Packet market. The VP7 represents the 7th generation of DSP engines designed by our team and can be integrated into custom semiconductor designs. What makes us unique in the VoIP space is that we supply not only the chips, but also our own operating system and complete VoIP application software. We can have our customers up and running in a matter of a few months with new VoIP products such as phones and gateways with the customers' own unique product feature set. We are pleased to offer such a powerful and flexible product as the Audacity-VP7 to the VoIP market."

Architecture

The Audacity-VP7 is based on a single instruction multiple data (SIMD (Single Instruction stream Multiple Data stream) A computer that performs one operation on multiple sets of data. It is typically used to add or multiply eight or more sets of numbers at the same time for multimedia encoding and rendering as well as scientific ) architecture that combines a RISC RISC

engine with a highly parallel DSP coprocessor. The RISC engine functions as the main controller supplying flow control and address generation for the DSP section. It also controls the I/O and DMA controllers. The DSP section has an arithmetic logic unit See ALU.  (ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) The high-speed CPU circuit that does calculating and comparing. Numbers are transferred from memory into the ALU for calculation, and the results are sent back into memory. Alphanumeric data are sent from memory into the ALU for comparing. ) and a multiply accumulate unit (MAC), each of which has dual 64-bit inputs and outputs. Each of the units can simultaneously perform four operations per cycle. The ALU can add, subtract, perform logical operations and transpositions, as well as 32-bit signed normalizations and bit shifting with saturation. The MAC performs four independent 16X16 multiply accumulate operations or four 32-bit addition operations each cycle.

Performance

The Audacity-VP7 performs 400 million multiply accumulates per second and has an overall performance of up to 5.3 billion operations per second, depending on the characteristics of the program coding.

Software

The Audacity-VP7 comes complete with Netergy's comprehensive list of audio processing components, including a set of precompiled ITU vocoders such as G.711, G.726, G.723.1, G.729a/b, G.728 and G.729E. Additional audio services offered are echo cancellation (G.165/G.168), DTMF (Dual-Tone MultiFrequency) The type of audio signals that are generated when you press the buttons on a touch-tone telephone.
