3200 family of any-rate synchronous crosspoint circuit switches designed to regenerate and switch data independent of protocol. The circuit switches give network and storage network designers a simple, comprehensive switching and signal integrity solution, providing OEMs a migration capability to next-generation serial I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. The devices address next-generation Fibre Channel, Serial Attached SCSI See SAS.  (SAS (1) (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, www.sas.com) A software company that specializes in data warehousing and decision support software based on the SAS System. The VSC3200 family combines SerDes-based (Serializer/Deserializer) crosspoint switching functionality, with Vitesse's industry-renowned per-channel Equalization (EQ) and per-channel Clock Data Recovery (CDR (1) See CD-R and extension.

) capability. The family includes the quad VSC3204, the octal VSC3208, and the 12-port VSC3212 circuit switch products. The fully non-blocking, multicast architecture allows the devices to be user configured for a broad range of applications such as high-speed signal clean up and signal switching in backplanes, box-to-box interconnects, and cabling environments. The devices support data rates up to 4.25 Gbps with a single reference clock input.

Best-in-Class Equalization (EQ)

Vitesse EQ Technology(TM) improves signal performance and provides a solution for jitter associated with driving multi-Gigabit signals across PCBs, backplanes, and cables. Jitter can increase bit-error-rates (BER (1) (Basic Encoding Rules) A set of encoding rules for ASN.1 notation, which is a method for defining data structures. See ASN.1.

(2) (Bit Error Rate) The average number of bits transmitted in error. See BERT.

) thus lowering overall system performance. The VSC3200 switches' configurable EQ settings and CDR give system designers maximum flexibility in addressing system-specific jitter issues, effectively eliminating both random and deterministic jitter. Real-world results show that the combined Vitesse EQ and CDR technology eliminates both deterministic and random jitter over backplane channels that are up to 1 meter long and low cost cables as long as 10 meters. The VSC3200 devices yield a constant received jitter of less than 80 ps over data rates ranging from 155 Mbps to 4.25 Gbps. Similar jitter reductions were achieved at constant rates over varied backplane channel lengths.

Multi-protocol Performance Simplifies Board Design

The VSC3200 switches regenerate and switch any serial data stream. With a single reference clock input, these switches are protocol independent and operate at any data rate between 155 Mbps and 4.25 Gbps, making them useful in Fibre Channel, Gigabit Ethernet, SAS, SATA, and related networking and storage protocols. The onboard reference synthesizer saves on board cost, area, and reliability compared to discrete solutions. The fully non-blocking, multicast architecture is configured via a two-wire serial interface for simple configuration in a broad range of applications. The VSC3200 circuit switch product family also forwards out-of-band signals used in SAS and SATA storage applications.

"These switch products integrate the necessary switching and signal integrity tools for system designers to develop next-generation storage and networking systems," said Juan Garza, circuit switching product marketing manager at Vitesse. "By integrating Vitesse's world-class equalization, CDR, and SerDes technologies, designers now have a powerful, yet simple, tool to address the fundamental signal routing and degradation issues across a wide range of high-speed communication systems."
