Vitesse Enables Design of Low-cost Switches by Bringing Managed Layer 2 Functionality to SparX(TM) 16- and 24-port Gigabit Ethernet Switches.

), the market leader in Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  ICs, today announced availability of its WebSparX 2.0 switch software, launched in conjunction with production availability of the SparX-G16(TM) and SparX-G24(TM), the world's only integrated 16- and 24-port switch-on-a-chip products. Together, the SparX devices with the WebSparX 2.0 software enable the design of low-cost smart Small/Medium Business and Small/Medium Enterprise (SMB/SME) switches that offer the features of fully managed switches while reducing the bill of materials The list of components that make up a system. For example, a bill of materials for a house would include the cement block, lumber, shingles, doors, windows, plumbing, electric, heating and so on.  (BOM) of the system. By eliminating the need for external processing and memory resources, developers can deliver a smart switch with advanced Layer 2 capabilities at a fraction of the cost for a fully managed switch.

In the past, IT administrators had to use a serial port to connect smart switches to a portable laptop and use a clumsy command line interface for manual configuration and management. Today's Layer 2 switches must be WebSmart, providing an embedded web server Web server software embedded within a hardware device such as a print server. It is widely used in a myriad of devices, because it allows access to the software via any Web browser, typically for configuring the device or obtaining reports. See ETI and Web server.  allowing network administrators to manage a network (such as setting up ports, configuring VLANs, or downloading statistics) all from a remote browser. To enable advanced management capabilities, developers had to introduce an external CPU CPU

and memory subsystem to implement even the most basic Layer 2 functions, significantly increasing overall switch cost. Additionally, the low-cost drive of SMB/SME applications often led OEMs to use CPUs that could offer only limited Layer 2 processing.

"We continue to deliver on our promise to keep our customers competitive by offering highly integrated switch SoCs and software solutions that support the latest standards and advanced features required by today's networks," said Claus Stetter, product line director for Vitesse's Ethernet Products Division. "With the release of WebSparX 2.0, our customers can design managed 16- and 24-port switches at a fraction of the cost of competitive offerings with similar features."

Integrated Hardware and Software Minimize Cost

Vitesse is the only vendor offering a switch with an integrated CPU and comprehensive software capable of providing managed Layer 2 functionality. With WebSparX 2.0 for its SparX family of switches, Vitesse enables three key managed switch functions that stabilize and improve previous desktop switch configurations for SMB/SME applications: Link Aggregation, Spanning Tree, and Security.

Link Aggregation: Today's aggregated traffic between users and in-house data centers easily exceeds a single Gigabit Ethernet link bandwidth. Dynamic Link Aggregation support between the central switch and wiring closet The central distribution or servicing point for cables in a network. See MDF and wire center.  makes it possible for the network administrator to dynamically scale the bandwidth and provide a failover mechanism when a link goes down.

Spanning Tree: Loops within a network (that is, when there are multiple paths between two switches) can quickly bring down a network. While it is very simple to create a loop, it can be extremely difficult to locate and cut them manually. Switches that support Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol Based on an algorithm invented by Radia Perlman while working for Digital Equipment Corporation[1][2], Spanning Tree Protocol Is an OSI layer-2 protocol which ensures a loop free topology for any bridged LAN.  (R/STP) can automatically locate and cut loops. In addition to increasing network reliability, R/STP also simplifies network expansion by automatically discovering new equipment as it is attached.

Security: Support for 802.1X port security is an essential switch requirement for maintaining overall network security. 802.1X enables a network to route all users to a RADIUS server for authentication (1) Verifying the integrity of a transmitted message. See message integrity, e-mail authentication and MAC.

(2) Verifying the identity of a user logging into a network.
. Switches that do not support 802.1X create network vulnerabilities at the edge by leaving unprotected ports over which data may be stolen or a virus attack launched.

SparX switch devices are capable of delivering all of these features simultaneously without impacting wire speed forwarding, a feat that cannot be achieved by architectures employing a low-cost, external CPU. Additionally, OEMs can upgrade already deployed equipment with the latest version of WebSparX 2.0 software to introduce these features to existing networks.

Availability and Pricing

Version 2.0 of Vitesse's WebSparX is available immediately for all SparX switch devices including the SparX-G16 and SparX-G24 now shipping in production volumes and priced at $48.00 and $64.00 USD USD

, respectively. There is no charge for the software, and it is royalty and license-free. WebSparX 2.0 is distributed as source code, giving OEMs maximum flexibility in their switch designs.
