LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 7, 2002

Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (Nasdaq:VTSS VTSS Vehicle Theft Security System
VTSS Vancouver Technical Secondary School
) today announced the release of OSCAR (Open System for CommunicAtion in Realtime) AOL's internal project name for AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). The core functions of OSCAR, known as the Basic OSCAR Services (BOS), include Login/Logoff, Locate (find out about other AIM users), Instant Message , an extension of its traffic management family of products. The OC-12/OC-48 AAL-5 Segmentation And Reassembly segmentation and reassembly - segmentation  device (OSCAR) is ideally suited for use in OC-12 and OC-48 ATM applications such as multi-service switch and router line cards, DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor) A central office (CO) device for ADSL service that intermixes voice traffic and DSL traffic onto a customer's DSL line. It also separates incoming phone and data signals and directs them onto the appropriate carrier's network. See DSL.  and broadband DLC (1) (Data Link Control) See data link and OSI.

(2) (Data Link Control) The data link layer protocol (layer 2) that is used in IBM's SNA networking. See SNA, data link protocol and Microsoft DLC.
control cards, digital cross-connects, and multi-service add/drop multiplexers.

OSCAR is a competitively priced, future-proof solution for designers who require an AAL (ATM Adaption Layer) The part of the ATM protocol that breaks up application packets into 48-byte payloads which become ATM cells when the 5-byte headers are attached. The AAL resides between the higher layer transport protocols and the ATM layer. 5 SAR (Segmentation And Reassembly) The protocol that converts data to cells for transmission over an ATM network. It is the lower part of the ATM Adaption Layer (AAL), which is responsible for the entire operation. See AAL.

SAR - segmentation and reassembly
with traffic management functions. The OSCAR includes per-flow policing and congestion control, in addition to per-port shaping and scheduling. OSCAR is both hardware and software compatible with the Vitesse PaceMaker(TM) 2.5 traffic management engine, allowing a seamless migration path to high-touch traffic management designs requiring per-flow functions and capabilities. OSCAR complements other Vitesse products including the GigaStream intelligent switch fabric, the IQ2200 network processor and the Monitor(TM) 4.8 OAM (Operations Administration Maintenance) Refers to managing and maintaining a network or network device. The P in "OAM&P" adds "provisioning" to the list, which is a telephone company term for setting up a service.  network traffic manager.

OSCAR raises the bar on features and value for OC-12 SAR and traffic management components. When compared to other available solutions, OSCAR doubles density by supporting dual full-duplex OC-12c connectivity in a single chip. OSCAR improves support for quality of service by managing up to eight IP precedence classes and sixteen class-of-service priorities per port. Being a hardwired but configurable solution, OSCAR offers guaranteed throughput and feature independence much better than available software-based solutions. Finally, OSCAR is priced well under half that of the closest competitor on a per-port basis.

"OSCAR appears to be a sensible addition to the Vitesse traffic management portfolio, to meet a growing need from customers not building traditional ATM Line Cards. It is a lower-cost solution for designers who don't require all of the per-flow functionality of the PaceMaker 2.5 device. Vitesse is leaving customers the flexibility to migrate up to the PaceMaker in the future when their requirements change," said Jag Bolaria, senior analyst with The Linley Group.

"OSCAR provides two essential functions for most networking designs, an AAL5 SAR and traffic management. OSCAR also significantly reduces customer time-to-market by solving one of the most difficult IC implementation tasks -- queue and buffer management at OC-48c speeds. We are making it easier, faster, and now, more economical for customers to use Vitesse's AAL-5 SAR rather than spinning home-grown ASICs," said Raif Onvural, vice president and general manager of Vitesse's Multi-Service Solutions Group.

OSCAR is available today and shipping at $350 in production quantities. For more information on OSCAR, PaceMaker 2.5 or any of Vitesse's products, please visit www.vitesse.com. Or see our traffic management demonstration in booth #3035 at Networld+Interop.
